“Somewhere Only We Know” is a song by the English band Keane, released in 2004 on their debut album Hopes and Fears. It’s one of their most beloved songs because its meaning is intentionally open to interpretation.

At its heart, the song is about nostalgia, change, and longing for a place or feeling that once brought comfort. The “somewhere only we know” can mean:

* A real place that two people shared together.
* A cherished memory from childhood.
* A relationship that felt safe and meaningful.
* A private emotional space where someone felt understood.

The lyrics like “Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?” express the feeling of growing older and missing the simplicity and security of the past.

According to Keane, the song wasn’t written with one fixed meaning. The band has said that it can represent a geographical place, a feeling, or a memory, and they want listeners to connect it to their own lives. For songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley, it was inspired by a place from his childhood in Sussex where the band members spent time growing up.
