When I say the word ‘rope’, what images come to mind?

I see mountaineers, theatrical riggers and salty deck-hands hoisting the sails; I see a visual patchwork of rickety bridges, winches, pulleys and swings…

If rope were a person, I could TOTALLY see it wearing a flat cap and smoking Capstan Navy from a briar pipe.

Rope IS, in essence, a thing of UTILITY- which makes Neon Zinn’s novel reframing of this braided textile from haulage equipment to high-fashion accessory just SO visually subversive!

Crafted; more often than not; from a SINGLE length of dip-dyed rope, Neon Zinn brainchild Seth Damm cuts and manipulates these densely woven strands into complex (and STARTLINGLY symmetrical) configurations with careful, calligraphic skill; shaping and binding each loop into place via tightly secured lengths of mercerised cotton.

Like a footpath, maze, or winding river, Damm’s striking chestpieces of heavy duty lace dare the wearer to follow each twisted strand through a tricksy labyrinth of clove-hitch knots and figure-eights; a tactile treat of spaghetti coils and liquorice-braid curlicues in high-contrast ombré tones.

Every step of the way bringing care and intention to my chosen craft ♡
(I left the videos a little long so you get a sense of the time taken for each step.) Thanks for watching, it's been a moment since I showed my process this in depth.

Each necklace starts with portions of rope cut for the specific design. This design, Lifted Heart, requires 4 lengths with very particular color gradations. I tie markers of yarn so when I get to the dye buckets I know where orange goes and where blue goes, etc. leaving room for play always.

Once the lengths are rinsed (this time in frozen buckets because of severe weather) it's back to the table where I bring the shape together using a few different techniques I've developed over the years. Then trimming of cut ends and hammering the brass clasp bring it all to the finished wearable form.
