350 pages into The Disappearers and I can’t get enough of it ❤️ However in my head I have Jarvis Crocker’s comment at the Shortlist announcement that he isn’t a fan of music references in novels….does that put a question mark on this book winning??? Personally I love the references to music, particularly Aussie bands 🇦🇺

Made it to the final book on the Booker Prize longlist! This list was a rollercoaster ride for me.
I’m only 60 pages along in The Disappearers but I’m hooked. Not going to rush this one. If I don’t finish it by next Tuesday, so be it, as I do have a bookclub read that needs some attention.

Only 2 to go 👏🏻

John of John has my heart. I adored my time with Cal and his dad and the third character, Harris.

May We Feed the King - devoured in a single session on a rainy Saturday. Came in completely (and deliberately) blind to the story and enjoyed the journey.

A profitable Booker reading week and discovering All Them Dogs by Djamel White was the definite highlight. Have preordered The Disappearers while John of John and May We Feed the King are already in my hot little hands. Only Switzy to purchase on its release.

Took a bit of a break from the Booker Prize list to pick up my book club read and some library books that finally came available, but now I’m just shy of the halfway mark. Previously I’ve tried to read them all before the shortlist is released but I’m not putting myself under that unnecessary pressure because, well, life 😁

Booker Update
finished 2 books from the long list since the announcement

THE VIVISECTORS by Missouri Williams
I was really excited to read this book based on the blurb and the judges’ summary. I hung in there. I wanted to love it but I finished it and felt confused. Maybe this is one that really really really benefits from a re-read. Bizarrely, having slept on it, I think I want to read it again to see if I can see why the judges loved it. If it makes the short list, I will do so.

HELEN OF NOWHERE by Makenna Goodman
I enjoyed the structure of this novel/novella and the writing. Apparently there are references to the classics that went completely over my head. The more I sit with it, the more I am appreciating this work.

My literary love affair with George Saunders continues. There was a sense of trepidation at the start as I knew there were some negative views (aka Bardo-lite) but by page 2 I was fully captured by Saunders’ writing. Already lined this up for a re-read.
