Lyndon Neri (@nerilyndon), Hon. FAIA, Kenzō Tange Design Critic in Architecture at Harvard GSD, and Rossana Hu, Hon. FAIA (@rossanahu), Chair and Miller Professor of the Department of Architecture at University of Pennsylvania Weitzman School of Design, Founding Partners of Neri&Hu Design and Research Office, will be delivering a lecture titled “Liminal Ground” at Harvard Graduate School of Design. @harvardgsd @harvard @weitzman_arch @weitzman_school

The lecture will explore the notion of liminality and liminal space, where cultural boundaries are active sites of translation, discursive hybridity, and perpetual transformation. Rooted etymologically in the Latin limen, meaning “threshold,” liminality situates between fixed positions of cultural action, unsettling established orders while engaging with the past, present, and future. In this space, linear narrative yields to fluid and relational modes of perception.

Drawing on a selection of the studio’s past and ongoing works, the lecture will examine how Neri&Hu’s practice engages with boundaries within what Homi Bhabha terms the “third space”, not as loci of resolution, but rather as continuous fields of negotiation, tension, and emergent possibility.

We are pleased to announce that Lyndon Neri (@nerilyndon), co-founding Partner of Neri&Hu Design and Research Office, has been appointed the Kenzō Tange Visiting Design Critic in Architecture for the Fall 2026 semester at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Named in honor of Kenzō Tange, a peerless figure among twentieth century Japanese architects and recipient of the 1987 Pritzker Architecture Prize, this distinguished design teaching appointment carries forward Tange‘s enduring legacy of architectural and urban inquiry.

Past holders of the chair include Alvaro Siza, Zaha Hadid, Peter Zumthor, Kazuyo Sejima, Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara (Grafton Architects), Wang Shu, Yung Ho Chang, Kersten Geers and David Van Severen (OFFICE), Christian Kerez, Anne Lacaton, OPEN (Li Hu and Huang Wenjing), Lina Ghotmeh, Dorte Mandrup, Minsuk Cho, and many other visionary practitioners from around the world.

To celebrate Neri&Hu’s 20th Anniversary, we are delighted to share a selection from our Archive Series that reflects the ethos of our practice.

Urban Renewal

For Neri&Hu, urban renewal is never an act of restoration. Grounded in what the practice terms reflective nostalgia, our adaptive reuse projects engage the city not through a mimetic return to the past, but through a critical dialectic between preservation and demolition. This negotiation constitutes one of the fundamental ethos of our work. While these urban renewals share recurrent operational strategies, including material contrast, tectonic differentiation, formal assemblage, and surgical grafting, each project confronts a distinct set of challenges. These pertain to the fraught legacies of the concession era, a resistance to the commodification of historical pastiche, and the question of representation within the temporal dialectic of past and present. Across the works presented, one discerns a careful calibration of opposing forces: the new against the old, the smooth against the textured, and the refined against the raw.

FAIA, Founding Partner of Neri&Hu Design and Research Office, will be delivering a lecture titled “Liminal Ground” as part of the DATUM: KL 2026 lecture series, organized by Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival 2026 (@klaf_my). The lecture will explore boundaries of the “third space” through a selection of the studio’s past and present works.

This lecture is presented as part of the DATUM: KL 2026 series, which brings together architects, designers, and industry leaders shaping the future of the built environment. Studio Vita Activa & The Common World
A Palimpsest of Justice in New York Chinatown
This design studio operates as an act of architectural activism. We will use the urgent, real-world program of social housing and a community school on the contested site of the Manhattan Detention Complex (“The Tombs”) to explore a central question: How can architecture perform a therapeutic, civic function by transforming a space of confinement into a space of emancipation, actively cultivating Hannah Arendt’s Vita Activa in a community under existential threat?

Our inquiry is framed by the fundamental dialectic between the public and private realm, now supercharged by the site’s history. We will investigate how architecture can negotiate this tension and the site’s violent legacy to foster a resilient community capable of action, work, and belonging, directly confronting gentrification, cultural erosion, and the politics of memory. by @nerilyndon

Each year, before the chaos of Salone begins, I make time for one quiet ritual: visiting Santa Maria presso San Satiro, a small chapel by Bramante buried deep in Milan’s dense urban fabric. It is more than a hidden gem. It is an anchor for all the noise of this week. Bramante’s church is not a deception but a revelation. Faced with a site too shallow for a traditional apse, he did not retreat to a reduced plan. Instead, he constructed depth through perspective, a painted and sculpted space compressed into just ninety-seven centimeters. In this sense , architecture operates as much through the projection of spatial experience as through measured extension. The church reminds us that depth is not only built but also beheld.
