We gathered our incoming batch of students for the session 2026-27 here at IITDELHI documenting the fairly nervous and exciting beginning on campus, recalling their favourite things about their home states back at northeast India. We wish them all the very best for the new journey here on campus and beyond.

On the occasion of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, we asked our friends from the 8 Northeastern states of India to share a little about their culture in their own languages.

Northeast India is home to more than 200 distinct Indigenous communities, each with its own languages, histories, traditions and ways of life.

Many of these communities remain small ethnic minorities within the larger national population, often overlooked in a country of nearly 1.5 billion people.

Several of these languages are endangered, which makes speaking them, sharing them and passing them on all the more important.

So we asked our students to speak in theirs.

Here’s a small glimpse into some of the many cultures and languages of Northeast India.

A Career Counselling Workshop was successfully organized by the North-East Students’ Forum (NESF), IIT Kharagpur, in collaboration with the North-East Society (NES), IIT Delhi, for students from Classes 8–12 across 10 schools in Aizawl, Mizoram, from 9–16 May 2026.
Through this initiative, speakers shared insights into higher education opportunities, scholarship pathways, and life at premier institutions, drawing from their own experiences as students of IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur.
The program received an overwhelmingly positive response from both students and teachers. Many schools expressed their appreciation for the initiative and encouraged us to continue conducting similar workshops in the future.
We extend our sincere gratitude to NESF IIT Kharagpur for inviting NES IIT Delhi to collaborate on this meaningful outreach program. We also thank our sponsors and partners for their valuable support in making this event possible.
We remain committed to empowering students through guidance and mentorship, and look forward to organizing more such initiatives in the years ahead.
