Phew! After a busy, fun-filled, and long summer, I think I’m ready for a break. Starting today, I will be away from social media through the end of October. I need time to decompress and relax after doing so much work promoting Define “Black,” sharing videos and reels, and creating content. Plus, I’m feeling a little bit burnt out after spending so much time and energy on social media making my presence known and spreading my light out to others. It’s not fall until I get to the Maryland Renaissance Festival… And not even the threat of a Nor’easter can keep me from enjoying my annual birthday trip to Revel Grove. I didn’t want to end this week without sharing some final thoughts on The Waiting Room… And it can be best summed up in one word: GRATITUDE. Was this a perfect experience? Nope! However, it was just what I needed. This show is the first production in over a year where I was in a safe environment and I actually had a full tech week and performances that I actually felt good about. And while there were things that could be better, the fact that I got to do what I love doing and with an incredible cast and crew spoke so many volumes to me. And to do what I love on my birthday… I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday than this! 🥹 To my amazing cast: thank you all so much for your talents, kindness, laughter, and joy these past few months. I want do find a way to work with each and every one of you again soon! To Alexis: thank you for your patience and grace as our Director. I know there were plenty of things out of your control, but you led the ship very well and I hope that we work together again soon! To Aimee: thank you for keeping all of us in line, and keeping me safe and sane with fight calls and the Daily Calls! To Tyrone and Ivy: thank you for trusting me with this story and the role of Officer Clark. A big part of my mission as an actor is to go into spaces where people who are deemed unloved by others can be seen as loved and as human beings that are capable of love. Your story is a great example of my mission, and I’m a better person because of your story. Thank you for sharing this story with all of us, and I am honored to have brought it to justice and share the humor in the best way possible! What’s next for me? Well… Only time will tell. But I’m definitely stepping into it with gratitude. “Good luck with that! I’m going through a lot of self reflection right now, and part of that includes some eye-opening revelations about myself that I never realized or even truly understood until now. And a big part is that is just how much I have believed that I was the problem and I had to work twice as hard to fix things just to get people to like me. Including being cast in shows. But it was only recently I realized that I was never the problem to begin with… It was other people. All of the time spent working on myself doesn’t feel all for naught, but it does feel like I did way more than I needed to. And at the end of the day, all I should be able to do is focus on what I can control, and let the rest go. Especially when it comes to auditioning and making myself known in an industry that is so difficult. Both can exist: acceptance and grief. Even when you’re trying to book a role. I’m slowly getting back to auditioning for theatre projects and opportunities, and as expected, I’m not quite right for many of the things I go out for. Frustrating? Hell yes! But someone put it best this way: Maybe it’s not your lack of talent that’s the problem. Maybe it’s a puzzle the casting team is trying to solve, and perhaps you’re not quite the missing piece of the puzzle that they need. It’s something we all go through, and it gets harder when you audition for the same people and company over and over again without getting the results you want. Maybe it’s not necessarily you that’s the problem. On the contrary, it may be them! Because they don’t know what they’re missing by passing over you. Please keep being the shining star that you are, and know that you WILL be the missing piece of the puzzle they need for a show or opportunity. While there’s no emergency happening right now (we’re all hanging in there and doing our best, thanks for asking!), I think it’s safe to say that the rest of the year will be a bit more…interesting than usual financially.
