In early June I’m traveling back to Cuba with my grandparents and am looking for donations to provide medical supplies directly to Cuban people. Priority items are listed, and specific bags will be distributed for women and children. Any level of support is welcomed, handles are shown on the first slide. Please do not mention Cuba in any form with the donation, it’ll flag a review that requires an approval. Medical supplies are also welcomed, by mail or in-person around the Bay. Tons of you have helped in the past and I’m extremely grateful for the support and empathy. Any donations exceeding my personal capacity will be delivered via cargo.

My travels to Cuba started in 2016, when I first went to meet family. Over the years, I’ve brought over 850lbs of donations, mainly skateboarding, food, and jiu jitsu stuff. This will be my tenth trip, with a shifted focus on medical supplies. Cuba is my like my second home and solidarity will always be part of my purpose. Some photos from my grandma’s childhood in Cardenas and my first few years of travel are what ya see.

The average person makes less than $15 a month on the island, a bag of powdered milk costs $3, and a pack of chicken $10. A liter of gas is $10. Areas of the island have extended daily power outages of 6+ hours. Many cook with charcoal or wood. Public transit barely operates and private options are 2-4x the regular cost. Critical infrastructure is disrupted, buildings are literally collapsing. Donations really go the distance. by @nesskwiq

Congratulations to Vanessa on her promotion to Purple Belt!!!

Vanessa first started her training at Ralph Gracie San Jose/Santa Clara, and joined Kuleana Jiu-Jitsu from the beginning.

What can be said about Vanessa? She has been a huge part of Kuleana Jiu-Jitsu, helping develop our kids program as one of our main coaches, assisting in welcoming, mentoring, coaching, supporting and growing our Women's program.

There are always a few key people in an academy that really put the extra effort to support the growth and community, Vanessa by far is one of them. We are so grateful to have her in our family.

Vanessa's BJJ has been getting harder and harder to deal with, triangles, spider, open guard to name a few, is now giving trouble to everyone on the mats.

Made a much overdue trip to Cuba after four years. This was my first time visiting Holguin and spending time with the local skate community. It’s beautiful to see how skateboarding continues to expand on the island despite the extremely limited access to skate equipment and the general hardships faced daily by the Cuban people.

Forever grateful for all the kindness and love my family and friends show me during my trips.

10/21 I had my pacemaker replaced after 10 years. When I was 14 I was diagnosed with two heart conditions. Bradycardia, which is a slow heart rate - my resting was in the 30s bpm range, and sleeping around 15-20ish bpm, sometimes lower (full zombie). The second is AV block, which is electrical signal impairment between heart chambers. I’ve shown all three types over the years, first degree to complete heart block - my heart is off beat or no beat.

Despite my regular symptoms and compromised safety while sleeping, it took four years for me to receive a pacemaker due to medical qualifications. This caused so much frustration and fear during that period of limbo. I have always had immense love, support, and patience from my family and friends - from my initial 6 week hospital stay back in high school, till now. I genuinely cherish all of you for elevating and nurturing me, I hold that love always and it continues to uplift me to live fully.

Sometimes I get down thinking about this experience and the long term impacts on my heart health. But I recognize how much strength, confidence, drive, love, curiosity, passion, and appreciation this pacemaker has gifted me, I am blessed! It feels like I’m writing a summary to a life chapter, here’s to Vani 2.0 and an new era 🌻🍉 by @nesskwiq
