The software worked. Nobody owned the rule it was supposed to enforce.

A bank was recently fined R1m after a setting let hundreds of customers see other people's home loan applications. That is why the first job on any build should be writing down what the system must never do.

Before you ask for features, ask what the system has to get right every time. Then pay someone to keep it right.

A first custom software project can feel daunting. Noel Smith from Azorite felt the same, and ended up with exactly the application he had in mind.

Need software that keeps your business running smoothly? https://www.netgen.co.za/custom-software-built-for-your-business/ by @netgensoftware

Your website isn’t for your business.

It’s for the person sitting on the other side of the screen.

That sounds obvious, but it’s surprisingly easy to forget when you’re building or redesigning a website. Businesses naturally want to talk about themselves: how long they’ve been operating, what services they offer, how experienced their team is and what makes them different.

And there’s nothing wrong with that. Your website should tell people who you are.

But it shouldn’t make them work to figure out whether you can help them.
A visitor arrives with a problem, a question or a goal. They want to know whether you understand what they need, whether you offer the right solution and what they should do next. If they have to dig through pages of company information to find those answers, you’ve made the website about your business instead of about their experience.

The best business websites still communicate who you are. They just do it through the lens of what your users actually need to know.

Because your website might belong to your business.

But the experience belongs to your users. by @netgensoftware

Nine years ago Netassess came to us for a once-off project. Today it is a long-term partnership, and the system we built together leads their industry. Thank you, Lisa Frame and the Netassess team.

Thinking about a custom build? Let's talk: https://www.netgen.co.za/custom-software-built-for-your-business/ by @netgensoftware

Your website might be losing customers without you realising it.
Not because it's broken, but because it's creating friction.

A confusing navigation menu, a slow checkout process, unclear information, or a form that asks for too much can all make it harder for customers to do what they came to your website to do. And when that happens, they may simply leave rather than tell you what went wrong.

Some signs of website friction include:
• High drop-off rates on important pages
• Customers repeatedly asking questions your website should answer
• Difficult or confusing navigation
• Slow page loads or poor mobile experiences
• Users abandoning forms or checkout processes

Your website should make it easier for customers to interact with your business, not create extra work for them.

Identifying these friction points can help turn a frustrating experience into a smoother one - and potentially recover opportunities that would otherwise be lost. by @netgensoftware

62% of people in our latest LinkedIn poll said they would stop using a mobile app if it doesn't do what they need.

It sounds obvious, but it's an easy thing to lose sight of when building an app. It's tempting to focus on features, functionality and what the technology can do, rather than starting with what the user actually needs to accomplish.

31% said too much effort would make them stop using an app, which reinforces the same point from another angle. Even useful functionality loses its value if users have to work too hard to access it.

Only 8% chose an app that keeps causing problems, while no one chose data trust. That doesn't mean those things aren't important - they simply weren't the biggest reason respondents would stop using an app.

The best apps don't just give users more to do. They help them do what they came to do.
