Be honest: you won’t post a ‚before‘ photo, will you?

We all do it. We take a shot that finally works, show it, and quietly delete the twelve that didn’t. The image that the camera produces straight away is flat and a bit muddy. The skin tones are slightly off and it never quite captures what you saw with your own eyes however that’s perfectly natural and part of the process. The real magic isn’t in the moment you capture the frame, but in all the editing and enhancement that makes the picture convey the mood and emotions you experienced at the time.

It’s still the same shot and the same light; just a whole lot more love poured in between.

It’s that feeling when a picture looks so natural and spontaneous yet could be in a magazine.

We often talk about the ‚editorial style‘ when discussing wedding photography. However, there is currently a subtle yet lovely shift towards something even more carefree: the loose editorial vibe. This style brings back the beautiful, sophisticated look we all adore while removing the formality of perfect posing.

Rather than instructing the couple on the position of their hands or where to look, you set the lighting, arrange the scene and then take a step back. There’s freedom to move and capture a spontaneous laugh or a gust of wind that blows the veil out of frame. Sometimes, it’s the little motion blur or missed focus that makes the picture come alive.

This is such a small part of the decision-making process, yet it determines the whole picture.

The position of the horizon can completely transform the emotional impact of a photo. As photographers, we sometimes become so absorbed in focusing on our main subject that we forget about the powerful silence of their surroundings altogether. However, moving your camera up or down by just a few inches can completely change the composition. It sets the mood and unconsciously tells the viewer what’s most important.

Whether you decide to place it in the top third, the bottom third, the middle, or even without a horizon line, each composition will be a conscious decision because even the slightest change tells a completely different story.

Your perspective changes when you start thinking in black and white.

When you remove the colours from a scene, the other elements, such as lighting, shapes and the stories told by textures, become much more deliberate. Things that you might have found complicated or cluttered can, once the colours have been removed, become simple and exquisite, and of course much more touching.

For a photographer, black and white is less about eliminating a part and more about unveiling a part that was always present. It’s a great way to highlight contrast, form, mood and even action. A scene with nothing to distract the audience’s eyes can sometimes be the most fascinating.
