"A Mother's Brain," publishing on October 6th, is neuroscientist Susana Carmona's eye-opening account of how pregnancy transforms the brain even more profoundly than adolescence, drawing on decades of the author’s own pioneering research. Learn more and pre-order the book at the link in bio. *** "Timely and compelling" —Lisa Mosconi, Director of the Weill Cornell Medicine Women’s Brain Initiative; New York Times best-selling author of "The Menopause Brain" "The perfect guide to understanding a transformative process that sits at the center of humanity." —Dana Suskind, author of New York Times bestseller "Parent Nation" "A powerful, awe-inspiring, beautiful book." —Lucy Jones, author of "Matrescence" "Not only scientifically up-to-the-minute but also incredibly readable." —Sarah Blaffer Hrdy, author of "Father Time" by @neuro.maternal
🫀🧠🫀🧠🫀 @neuro.maternal by @neuro.maternal

What's your view II: A view from Literature about the Early Years Can a kite be a metaphor for freedom? How do the stories we tell children shape the way they see themselves and the world around them? And is children’s literature political? In this conversation, Van Leer inaugural Fellows ( @neuro.maternal ) Susana Carmona, a neuroscientist, and ( @loaayw ) Loaay Wattad, who holds a PhD in the sociology of children's literature, explore the relationship between politics, storytelling and early childhood. Because the stories we tell children shape what they see, imagine and believe is possible. What's your view? What's your view I: A view from Neuroscience about the early Years What happens to a woman’s brain when she becomes a mother? And is “mom brain” a real thing? In this conversation, two Van Leer fellows from the inaugural cohort, (@bovaristas) Fernanda Bastos, a Brazilian journalist, poet and new mother, and (@neuro.maternal) Susana, a neuroscientist, explore science behind the maternal brain and the biological, psychological and societal changes that come with motherhood. Research reveals that the maternal brain undergoes profound changes during pregnancy and postpartum, even more pronounced and dynamic than those that occur during adolescence. Yet, for a long time, these transformations received surprisingly little scientific attention. Discover what neuroscience is teaching us about the maternal brain, why these changes matter, and how a better understanding of motherhood can help us support mothers and their families. For my newsletter this week, I interviewed Susana Carmona, the pioneering neuroscientist behind @neuro.maternal, about her book, A Mother’s Brain (newly translated into English by @lilyjeanmeyer) and the science of what really happens to the maternal brain. Link in my bio by @neuro.maternal
The first time I read the English version of “Neuromaternal”, titled “A Mother’s Brain” @mitpress , it felt strange. It’s a very personal book, and reading it narrated in the first person by someone who isn’t you is a rather curious experience, to say the least. Lily Meyer @lilyjeanmeyer has captured the essence of my expressions perfectly, and she has been endlessly patient with me and all my little quirks. Thank you, Lily, for embodying my text and, at the same time, making it your own. The cherry on top came when I was told that Natalie @natalienaudus would be giving it voice, with her powerful and assertive texture and prosody. It makes me so happy that this text is no longer just mine, and that it has grown and become so much better thanks to the collaboration and efforts of the three of us. Here’s a little excerpt from the beautiful we-voice we’ve created together. I hope you like it #Neuromaternal #amothersbrain #neuroscience by @neuro.maternal
