Here we go, here we go, here we go!

I’ve long been inspired by graphic ephemera and particularly interested in the visual legacy of the 1984-5 UK Miners’ Strike. This tapestry feels important to me, especially because of what I’ve learned in making it.

The tapestry is based on the cover of a 1984 songbook “‘Here We Go with the Miners’: Songs for Pickets and Street Collectors”, published by Birmingham Trades Council Miners Support Group.

Music and textiles have both left such a tangible legacy of the Miners’ Strike and making this has felt like a nice way of bringing them together.

From brass bands, to Peggy Seeger, to picket line busking, music runs throughout the story of the strike. Textiles and fibre art are often seen as quieter tools of protest but were just as much a part of the culture of solidarity during the strike, from handmade flags, to the banners produced by mining communities and supporters that are still proudly showcased today.

Green Man

Haven’t quite worked out how to display this yet as it is gigantic (see 2nd pic). Had to jam two 3ft bamboo sticks together with a metal chopstick as a dowel so that I could mount it
