Remembering Meat Loaf, Born on This Day in 1947

Meat Loaf (Michael Lee Aday, born Marvin Lee Aday) (September 27, 1947 – January 20, 2022) possessed one of the most powerful and recognizable voices in rock. Before becoming a recording superstar, he worked extensively in musical theater and appeared as Eddie in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, experiences that perfectly suited the dramatic performer he would become.

His collaboration with Jim Steinman produced the monumental Bat Out of Hell in 1977. Paradise by the Dashboard Light, Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad and Bat Out of Hell turned grand emotions and teenage fantasies into epic rock songs, while Meat Loaf performed them with an intensity few singers could match.

The partnership reached another commercial peak with Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell and I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That) in 1993. Meat Loaf continued recording and acting for decades, building a career that extended far beyond the album that first made him famous.

He died on January 20, 2022, aged 74. Today, on the 79th anniversary of his birth, we remember one of rock music’s true larger-than-life characters.

Wishing a very happy 10th birthday to the final Jim & Meat collaboration.

Some memories of this album:

I remember being really interested to know what the cover art would be. Apparently there was going to be a preview at Meat's next tour, somewhere in the foyer or something like that. It was going to be a bit of a mystery I think, to see if anyone would be able to spot it. Does anyone remember seeing this on one of the forums? But I don't think this ended up happening.

I remember Meat Loaf telling me on his page, in the comments section, that it was going to be a nod to the movie "North by Northwest". So basically this is a nod to the scene with the crop duster. I also love the nods to "Bat out of Hell II: Back into Hell", "Dead Ringer" and "Bat out of Hell", and then Jim with the guitar from "Bad for Good".

Seeing this art was a really exciting moment for me. I can't remember what I saw first now: the track list or the art.

I remember hearing this album. I thought it was great how it started off with "Who Needs the Young?". "Going all the Way (A Song in 6 Movements)" was not only epic because it was Meat Loaf and Jim, but because Ellen and Karla were singing together, and with Meat. "Speaking in Tongues" was a very special moment. I like the new version of "Loving you's a dirty job (But somebody's gotta do it)". Must have been a thrill for Ben, who found these songs in New York, I think, and helped get them through to the community in 2010, and suddenly Meat is recording "Souvenirs" and "Train of Love". I really like "Souvenirs" too, "Only When I Feel", "More" was a cool version, "Godz", "Skull of your Country", and "Train of Love".

I love that it ended with "Train of Love". It just seems so right to me. It could have been "Speaking in Tongues" or "Going all the Way". I can't really explain this right now but it just feels right that it was "Train of Love".

Going back to 1983, Jim Steinman and Bonnie Tyler, on a TV show called Ladybirds.

Jim: “And then I did - I guess what you could call a ballad, though it seems unfair, because ‘ballad’ suggests something passive and this thing is... I thought of it more as a fever song, it’s a mad scene, it’s... the other side of love. Most pop songs are about the lyrical side of love, the pleasant side, I’ve always liked writing about the darker side. Obsession. The song’s called Total Eclipse Of The Heart. In fact, I wrote it during the last lunar eclipse, and just seemed like the perfect image to describe when someone is totally overwhelmed by love, it’s like an eclipse; there’s no more light at all.”

Goodbye and rest in peace to Bonnie Tyler who passed away in Portugal.
The 20’s have not been kind to the “Steinworld”. First Jim Steinman, then Meat Loaf and now Bonnie Tyler 😥
