Sometimes a tool just deserves a slow spin under good light.

No job to do here, no bearing to pull or bracket to loosen, just a chance to actually look at the thing properly. The shape, the machining, the way it’s built to do exactly what it needs to and nothing else.

It’s easy to rush past details like this when you’re mid job and just reaching for what you need. But every angle on this one tells you something about why it works as well as it does.

Sometimes the best content is just letting a good tool be a good tool.

One tool. Four sizes. No guessing.

Most of us who work on our own bikes have that drawer, the one full of single purpose bottom bracket tools that each only fit one specific standard. Buy a new bike, buy a new tool. It adds up fast.

This one takes a different approach. Same tool, same job, but it covers four different sizes without compromising the fit on any of them. That’s the part that actually matters: a loose fit on a BB tool is how you end up rounding out the notches and turning a five-minute job into a very long afternoon.

It’s still a specific tool. It’s not pretending to be a universal do-everything solution. It just happens to solve four versions of the same problem properly.

Zoom in on this for a second.

That knurling isn’t just there to look good; it’s grip when your hands are covered in grease, and the last thing you want is a tool slipping mid turn. Every little diamond pattern cut into that handle is doing actual work.

And those threads, chunky, deep-cut, built to handle real torque without stripping or binding halfway through. That’s the difference between a tool that feels flimsy under load and one that just muscles through the job without complaint.

It’s easy to overlook the small stuff when you’re just grabbing a tool out of the drawer, but details like this are exactly why some tools feel effortless, and others feel like a fight.

What actually makes something a tool?

By definition, a tool is any physical item or device used to carry out a particular function or solve a problem. It can be something as simple as a tire lever, or a highly engineered device built to solve a hyper specific mechanical puzzle.

Case in point: this Lebycle bearing puller.

Separately, these pieces are just hardware. Together, they form a small symphony of threads and collets, the exact answer to a high-precision problem that brute force could only ruin.

Whether it’s a hex wrench or a multi-piece puller kit, the right tool turns a mechanical nightmare into a satisfying workshop win.

Does your spoke key actually matter?

A cheap, multi-sized spoke key seems like the smart move: one tool, fits everything, sorted. But that flexibility comes at a cost. Looser tolerances mean more play between the tool and the nipple, and that’s exactly how you end up rounding one out mid-build or fighting a slip right when you don’t want it.

A quality, single-size key is a whole different experience. Machined to tighter tolerances, it locks onto the nipple with barely any play, so you get a cleaner bite and way more confidence chasing precise tension across a full build. Yeah, it costs more and means a few sizes in the toolbox, but the control you get back is worth it.

If you’ve actually built a few wheels, you’ll know the difference straight away. Standard spoke key, or are you tensioning from the inside?

Star ratchet vs the higher-engagement, more complex systems, where do you sit?

There’s something to be said for the tried and true stuff. A basic ratchet system has been around forever because it just works: fewer moving parts, simple to service, and it’s proven itself over decades of hard riding.

Then you’ve got the more complex end of things, systems built around more pawls, springs, and engagement points to chase near-instant pickup. Cleverer engineering for sure, but more parts also means more that can go wrong, and it’s not always as straightforward to strip down and service on the trail or at home.

I get the appeal of both. There’s a certain reliability in going with something simple and well proven, but there’s also a lot to like about a hub that just feels sharper the second you put power down.

What do you actually look for when picking a hub for a custom wheel build?

Is it the colour (be honest), the points of engagement, or straight up price? Or are you more in the weight/durability / ease-of-servicing camp?

For me it’s a mix; I want something that’s going to hold up in the real world, but I’m not going to pretend a nice anodised colourway doesn’t sway me too. Engagement matters too: there’s a real difference between a standard hub and something with near-instant pickup on techy climbs, even if most of us don’t need the fastest option out there for everyday riding. And then there’s servicing: some hubs you can strip and rebuild in twenty minutes, others you’re sending away to the professionals.

When you think of Wheels Manufacturing, the first thing to come to mind are; Derailleur hangers, bearing presses and bottom bracket sockets; however, they’ve started to expand their offering.

Today we’re looking at their new chainrings. So far, they offer: SRAM 3-bolt and Shimano direct mount, 28-34 tooth counts and they’re available in 7 different colours. All rings are machined in the Colorado in the US of A from 7075 Aluminium.

The offering will continue to expand in the near future.

*8 bolt mounting gravel rings have also just been added 11/08 by @nevjem
