“Gorillas have long fascinated us because we see ourselves in them. When you spend time with them, you can’t help but see so much of our behaviour reflected back. Like us, they have friends and enemies. They form relationships that last for decades and risk their lives defending their families. They laugh, fight, and hug their babies. They enjoy good meals and naps in the sun. ⁠⁠"They care for their most vulnerable and grieve their dead. Today is WORLD LION DAY. “In most Bantu cultures, a lion is a totem that symbolizes strength, courage, and personal power. Those people with the lion totem have the responsibility to protect the lion. In the Zimbabwean Shona culture, a lion is called “mhondoro.” It’s believed that mhondoro spirits reside in the bodies of maneless lions until they have a human host to possess, and that the person who is possessed will give advice based on the communication from the spirit. ⁠⁠"Losing the African lion would mean losing a part of who we are as an African people, a part of our culture and heritage. ⁠⁠"There are fewer than 20,000 lions remaining in the wild. In Africa, they currently inhabit less than 8 percent of their former range. Lions are currently facing complex threats. Unfortunately, many of these threats are caused by humans. One of the most loved animals on Earth, a symbol of power, strength, nobility and courage, African lion numbers have declined by around 50 per cent in the last 25 years. Lions occupy just eight per cent of their historic range. Recent estimates suggest there are around 20,000 lions remaining in the wild. “I firmly believe in drawing the line at zero further extinctions from our behaviour. Every species matters. We don’t know how many connections exist. Lots of creatures are dependent on each other. We need to try to prevent sudden changes in a system that come from one little tipping point. ⁠⁠But we see that if you let nature recover, she will recover. In Central America, we see areas where there were cities and pyramids, which are now covered by trees. With horrendous scenarios like Bikini Atoll, where the atomic bomb was tested a few decades ago, there are beautiful coral reefs. It illustrates that nature is resilient. ⁠⁠"In my lifetime, I’ve seen major declines in the world around me.
