Hi everyone! It’s Emma Carroll Hudson, IDJC’s Communications Specialist (aka the digital ace to those who subscribe to the newsletter). Before I head off to my next adventure, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my time working for IDJC and Newhouse DC.

Three years ago, I never imagined I’d end up living and working in Washington, D.C. Yet this city has become an unexpected home—and one that confirmed exactly where I’m meant to be.

Working with the Institute for Democracy, Journalism & Citizenship and Newhouse DC at SU’s Washington DC Center has given me the opportunity to build communications campaigns, launch and grow social media platforms, tell the stories of incredible students, faculty and even alumni. Plus getting to give guest lectures, lead Canva workshops, and explore corners of DC that many never get to see were experiences I’m grateful for. I’ll always be especially proud of campaigns like Democracy Playbook with @cusefootball and above all, of helping share the work happening at the intersection of journalism, democracy, and public life.

More than anything, I’m grateful for the students and colleagues who made this experience meaningful. Your curiosity, creativity, and encouragement have been a constant reminder of why I chose higher education.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of all? Discovering that my passion for pop culture and fandom didn’t take me to places like LA or NYC—it belonged here in DC. Working at the intersection of media, culture, and democracy only strengthened my commitment to studying those connections and bringing them into the classroom.

In a few weeks, I’ll begin my Ph.D. in Communication at American University. I’m excited to carry these experiences with me as I continue researching, teaching, and working toward creating learning environments where students know they can be both authentic and professional.

Thank you all for this chapter. The next one begins just a few Metro stops away 🍊💙→ 🦅❤️

“If it’s Sunday, it’s Meet The Press” 🎥📰🏛️

Yesterday morning, some of our BDJ grad students here for the summer capstone got to watch a live taping of @meetthepress with @kristen.welker.

We’re always grateful for these opportunities to have Q&A with the show’s host—Kristen Welker—whose career in broadcast journalism is always of significant inspiration for our students, along with executive producer David Gelles. His behind-the-scenes leadership keeps the show ready as one can be during these news-filled times.

As always, many thanks @nbcnews for hosting us 🍊💙 by @newhousedc

🚀 SpaceX wants to expand into a national wildlife refuge next. Home to endangered species like the ocelot — and now the center of a federal lawsuit.

Week 2 BDJ Washington DC Capstone Recap 🎤🎆⚾️

Students were on the National Mall interviewing people from all over the country who came to celebrate July 4th + America 250. This was just after their first week of orientation!

The rest of the week was all about the “work hard, play hard” mentality as students started getting into reporter mode, while also enjoying a Nats game and @suindc alumni happy hour 🍻

They were also joined by a familiar fella 🍊💙 @theottoorange by @newhousedc

Warren County is taking a closer look before deciding how future data center development could fit into the community. Zoning Director Mark Bloomer spoke with me about why county leaders are asking for more time to research the issue and why similar conversations are happening across North Carolina. #northcarolina #warrencountync #datacenter #AI #cbs17 by @newhousedc

Welcome to the journalism beat unlike any other 🎥📰🏛️

The Broadcast Digital Journalism Graduate Capstone is officially underway! Over the past week, students met faculty, connected with classmates, heard career advice from Newhouse alumni Weijia Jiang and Scott MacFarlane, and got an inside look at Washington journalism through visits to Spectrum News and NexStar Media Group.

Now, it’s time to report. We can’t wait to see the stories this cohort tells over the next six weeks! by @newhousedc

A passion for Newhouse 🍊🎙
A passion for sports ⚾🏈
A passion for Washington, DC 🏛

We're grateful to Newhouse alumnus Phil Hochberg '61, P'94 for his generous gift establishing the Philip Hochberg Family Newhouse DC Fund at the Institute for Democracy, Journalism & Citizenship.

The fund will support research and education at the intersection of sports and democracy by bringing distinguished speakers to campus, expanding student research opportunities, and developing innovative sports-related programming for future generations of Newhouse students.

Thank you, Phil, for investing in the future of journalism, sports, and civic engagement.

On June 3, 2026, the Center for the Creator Economy made its first appearance with the Congressional Creator Caucus at their Creator Row Event!

The event brought together lawmakers, platforms, and creators for a discussion on one of the fastest-growing industries around the globe.🌎

We thank caucus co-founder @repbethvanduyne and her staff for the invitation, and we look forward to continuing our presence at these important events.🍊
