In southern Iran, the traces of war are everywhere: in destroyed bridges, bombed homes and the graves of children. Essayist @kavehjan journeys through Hormozgan province, along the Strait of Hormuz, where people say the ceasefire never really arrived. He travels from the Bandar Abbas fish market to Minab, where 157 people were killed at a school, and Kuhestak, where a wedding was hit by U.S. strikes. With photography by @erfan_kouchari.

Sliman Mansour spent a lifetime using art to preserve Palestinian identity and connect people to their land. @_chrysographer looks at @rana.anani’s essay on Mansour’s legacy, from the iconic paintings that adorned Palestinian homes to the institutions he helped build and the generations of artists he inspired.

Anani knew Mansour from childhood as a close friend of her father’s, and remembers not only the artist behind works such as “Camel of Hardships,” but the gentle, humble man whose life and art became inseparable from Palestine itself.

U.S. cities and counties have been newly emboldened to crack down on people sleeping in public. But clearing homeless camps has not solved the crisis.

Winston Ross reflects on his report for New Lines from camps in Oregon, where legal rulings have given local authorities new impetus to enforce street-sleeping laws, even as homelessness remains driven by a drug epidemic, a housing shortage, rising poverty and mental health struggles. The crackdowns can move people out of sight without addressing the forces that pushed them onto the streets in the first place.

Over centuries, argues Mahmoud Habboush, layers of interpretation have mediated our experience and separated the self from the world. He reflects on a rupture in the history of consciousness and suggests that even the modern literature most immersed in the self can sometimes reveal an older intimacy with the world, one that existed before experience became something to be interpreted from a distance.

Advocates for the modern state of Israel often invoke the biblical past. But what happens when myth is treated as history?

Robin Yassin-Kassab examines how politicians and public figures frame Israel-Palestine through ancient religious narratives, collapsing the distance between scripture, modern nationalism and the realities of conquest, displacement and war.
