The Browser as Battlefield: Net Art’s Thirty-Year Reckoning

On view through September 27th at New International Picture Company in New York, “WEBSITES! WEBSITES! WEBSITES!” marks @rhizomedotorg’s 30th anniversary with a group exhibition tracing the website’s contested history as an artistic medium. Curated by @sofiagarcia, @bennakim, and @benoit.tokyo, the show brings together twenty artists, from net.art pioneers including Vuk Ćosić and Petra Cortright to contemporary practitioners such as Chia Amisola and Sarah Friend.

The exhibition maps the internet’s shifting cultural logic through four thematic frames: Anarchy, Abstraction, Poetic Computing, and Ghosts, spanning the DIY irreverence of the 1990s to a present in which bots and AI agents account for over half of all internet activity.

Against an internet increasingly hostile to human expression, these works make the case for the website as an irreducibly personal, political, and poetic form.

Nestor Siré: Vernacular Innovation and the Politics of the Screen

On view at @upstreamgallery, Amsterdam, through October 24, “Unframed Window” is the solo show of a new series by @nestorsire. The works depart from a PC gaming community technique that repurposes discarded LCD monitors into transparent displays, which the artist reads as an innovation: knowledge produced collectively at the margins of dominant technological infrastructure.

The series pairs paintings with video games, treating both as image-systems that construct identity, landscape, and politics. Caribbean Enemy connects Wifredo Lam’s La Silla with Contra (Konami, 1987), mapping geopolitical narratives of invasion and liberation onto the Caribbean landscape. Revolutionary Body juxtaposes Servando Cabrera Moreno’s Los Milicianos with Guerrilla War (SNK, 1987), contrasting the game’s masculinised heroes with Cabrera Moreno’s ambiguous militiamen, painted by a gay artist later persecuted by the same revolution. Interior Level finds a formal affinity between Amelia Peláez’s architectural interiors and the modular geometry of Super Mario Bros.

The parallel PC Gamer project, including a modified gaming PC housed in a reclaimed tyre, examines technological creativity under scarcity, interrogating the colonial logic that recognises innovation only when it originates at the centre.

Come, Sit, Stay: Miao Ying Examines AI, Control, and Digital Imagery in Solo Exhibition at Belvedere

On view at @belvedere21wien in Vienna through October 4, «Come, Sit, Stay» is a solo exhibition by @miao.ying.studio in which she probes the intersections of technology, ideology, and digital imagery. Her installations, videos, and paintings examine the mechanisms behind digital surveillance, government control, and media manipulation.

Curated by @sergey_harutoonian, the show is inspired by dog commands, deliberately juxtaposing dog training and human-led AI training: clearly defined commands guide both learning and control, in dogs as well as in AI.
In her latest works, Ying generates digital images through neural networks programmed with predefined parameters, then translates these compositions into analog, painterly formats. This fusion of new technologies and traditional image-making calls into question our perception of reality and control, rendering the abstract cycle of data processing into something concrete and sensory.

The artist also draws on cultural tropes predating modern computing: allusions to medieval magic, alchemy, and incantations suggest that technical innovations are always accompanied by irrational fears and hopes. Combining historical imagery with the latest advances in AI, she introduces a critical and humorous perspective on a technology whose social implications are only gradually becoming apparent.

THE LURE OF THE IMAGE Examines the Power of Digital Visual Culture

On view at @coberlin through September 20, the group show “THE LURE OF THE IMAGE” explores the visual worlds of social media feeds, dating app profiles, beauty filters, memes, ASMR videos, “cute” and “cursed” images, emojis, computer-generated imagery, and pixelated screenshots associated with conspiracy theories and political protest.

Curated by Marco De Mutiis, Doris Gassert, and Alessandra Nappo, it features works by Zoé Aubry, Sara Bezovšek, Viktoria Binschtok, Sara Cwynar, Éamonn Freel x Lynski, Dina Kelberman, Michael Mandiberg, and other artists. Their works examine visual phenomena that shape online communication, critique, and humor, highlighting the powerful role images play in contemporary social, cultural, and political life.

Through archives, installations, collage-based works, and immersive spatial interventions, the show reveals how images—and the infrastructures behind them, from algorithms to datasets—capture attention, provoke emotion, and influence perception, exposing the contradictions of digital visual culture.

Cezar Mocan’s “End of Signal” Explores the Uncertainty Behind Systems of Vision

On view at @onkaos_ in Madrid through October 17, “End of Signal” is a solo exhibition by @cezarmocan that examines what it means to see everything and still misinterpret it. Focusing on contemporary systems of earth observation, where images are increasingly automated and linked to decision-making processes, the exhibition asks what remains of uncertainty when vision is designed not to observe, but to validate and authorize action.

Curated by Sofía Enríquez, the exhibition centers on a fictional anomaly: a toxic lake disappears from satellite imagery during a solar eclipse and reappears at dawn. An insurance claim is filed for its “temporary non-existence,” witnesses contradict one another, and datasets fail to align. This rupture becomes a lens through which Mocan examines how institutions and machines struggle when certainty breaks down.

Rather than critiquing surveillance systems from the outside, Mocan inhabits their interior. The narrative voice belongs to a distributed satellite system — seventy-two “eyes” in low Earth orbit — attempting to reconstruct what happened to the lake while repeatedly falling short. Its conflicting interpretations reflect not only the limits of technology, but our own difficulty in accepting the unknowable.

“End of Signal” argues that contemporary infrastructures of vision do not simply encounter uncertainty — they manufacture it. By turning reality into competing versions, they create an excess of plausible explanations: each persuasive enough to shape perception, yet incomplete enough to challenge the next. The result is not a lack of information, but a condition of too many possible truths — a system that can endlessly look, yet cannot fully reconcile what it sees.

Hito Steyerl’s Animal Spirits: AI, Myth, and Economic Spectres at the Kunstmuseum Bonn

On view at the @kunstmuseumbonn through December 31, “Animal Spirits” presents an immersive installation by @hitosteyerl from the instiution’s collection.

The work conjures a mysterious, cave-like or even extraterrestrial environment in which nature, technology, and historical imagery converge. Using AI technologies, Steyerl animates references to prehistoric cave paintings, transforming them into a dense sensory field shaped by rhythmic soundscapes and recurring animal figures.
At the centre of the installation is a film that blends reality television, documentary material, and animation. Through this hybrid form, Steyerl examines contemporary social and political dynamics, including the rise of cryptocurrencies, the role of culture during pandemics, and contrasting agricultural systems.

The title animal spirits draws on a concept introduced by John Keynes in his 1936 work, where he describes how human emotions such as fear and greed influence economic behaviour. Steyerl reactivates and reframes this idea for the present, including a figure of a shepherd-activist named Nel, who warns of wolves that function as a metaphor for the aggressive competition of free-market systems.

Ornament Survival: AI, Identity, and the Politics of Desire

On view through 20 June at @rk_contemporary, “Ornament Survival” is a solo exhibition by @emiksn and marks the Japan debut of her new series of the same name. Alongside recent works expanding this body of work, the exhibition also features pieces such as Office Ladies, offering a clear view of the evolution of her practice. Curated by @tkresort, the show traces artist’s ongoing exploration of identity, image culture, and digital transformation.

Emi Kusano creates her works using a customized AI model trained on her own imagery. Through this process, she examines how personal expression is reshaped within contemporary information systems, where attention, recognition, and emotion are continuously circulated as data.

In a present shaped by accelerating information flows, the desire for visibility—both self-directed and externally driven—becomes constant yet never fully satisfied. Emotional experience is flattened into surface data, processed, and reconfigured by technology, blurring the boundaries between the real and the fictional.

Within this series, the artist transforms inner tension and desire into creative energy. Framing this process as a model of “survival through creation,” she connects it to her own childhood fascination with transformation, proposing art-making as a way of constructing new forms of presence and expression.

Vera Molnár: “Possibilities” – Printmaking and Algorithmic Drawing

On view through 26 July at @kunstmuseumbasel, Possibilities is a solo exhibition dedicated to Vera Molnár. Curated by Fabienne Ruppen, the show highlights Molnár’s printmaking practice and her pioneering role in computer art through 28 editions, including several multi-part works, produced between 1991 and 2023.

Molnár was fascinated by how a geometric form changes when a single parameter is slightly altered. As early as 1959, she developed what she called her “machine imaginaire”—a mental system for calculating variations in her compositions step by step.

In 1968, she began working with computers for the first time. Their computational power enabled her to systematically explore an almost infinite field of formal possibilities. Throughout her career, the computer remained a central tool in her artistic process, and her plotter drawings established her as a pioneer of media art.

Stigmergy Explores Networked Art and Infrastructural Independence

On view at the @ncm_melbourne in Melbourne through August 9, the group exhibition “Stigmergy” explores a new network built on artist-driven protocols.

Curated by new media collective @pseudo_au, the project creates a network centered on artists, their connections, and the imagined possibilities of infrastructural independence. It offers an alternative to the endless “slop shock,” rage bait, and doom scrolling that dominate online spaces.

Over a two-month intervention, local and international curatorial nodes feed into a custom digital architecture that seeds artworks, media, and ideas, which accumulate, transform, and mutate over time. Contributions from the community are absorbed and reinterpreted within the gallery, emphasizing the collaborative, evolving nature of the network.

Stigmergy questions what it means to encode personal values into dominant digital systems and examines what circulates when it happens. The project proposes that artistic work in networked technologies exists not only in media residues but also in the relationships and practices that sustain it.

Featured artists include Washdog Studio (Dave Court, Mat Morison, and others), HERVISIONS (Ruby Justices Thelot, Wendi Yan, Martyn Marciniak, and others), Antariksha Studio, PSEUDO, Group Chat Bait Endtime Chorus Line, and Touch Patch Remix Artists.

Rachel Maclean’s The Enhancement of Reason Explores AI, Creativity, and Digital Mythmaking

On view at @joshlilleygallery, London, through August 1, “The Enhancement of Reason” is a solo exhibition by @rachel_maclean_studio that examines how emerging technologies shape and refract contemporary society. Her latest body of work focuses on the impact of artificial intelligence on concepts of creativity, authorship, and autonomy, drawing parallels with the phenomenon of “Fairy Mania” that emerged during the Industrial Revolution.

The works reflect both our dismissive attitude toward the “slop” of imperfect generative outputs and our near-religious fascination with increasingly powerful forms of machine intelligence. Functioning as both altars and critiques, they explore the tension between skepticism and awe, while exposing the human ambitions and fantasies of power that drive technological innovation.

Grounded in recurring cycles of technological boom and disruption, the exhibition takes inspiration from the inventions, anxieties, and nostalgia of the High Victorian era. As the Industrial Revolution transformed Britain’s understanding of the world, scientific discovery often coexisted with a renewed fascination for folklore and the supernatural. Looking through newly developed microscopes, some observers claimed to see fairies in the distortions of the lens. The revelation of previously unseen worlds fueled popular interest—and at times genuine belief—in mystical realms.

The richly decorative fantasy imagery of artists such as Joseph Noel Paton and Richard Doyle flourished amid a society increasingly defined by science and industry. Drawing on this blend of folklore, ornamentation, and scientific experimentation, Maclean constructs a visual language through which to examine today’s machine revolution. Throughout the exhibition, LED-lit fairies guide visitors through the darkened gallery, illuminating both the space itself and the uncertain technological future that lies ahead.
