POSTS STORIES REELS

Recently I was asked how I find stories. I explained that some leads you pitch right away. Others you know are a great story, but time will show when to bring them to an editor. This story for Boston Globe @rhodeisland is one I have known for at least 15 years and always thought how interesting it is — and suspected others would think so too. I first met Marlen Scalzi in her sales and marketing role at the @hotelvikingnewport
One day she told me that the hotel was more than just a place of work for her because for nearly 20 years, it was her home. She grew up there, just like Eloise at The Plaza, and it was a childhood like none other. I don’t know of any other little girl in the world whose early memories include having breakfast with Louis Armstrong, a guitar lesson with Peter Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary, ran into Bob Dylan for years, or had European royalty living down the hall. (Or had Joan Crawford dump a bucket of water on her head!)
I’m honored Marlen trusted me to tell her truly unique and oh-so-Newport story! Link in bio by @newportstyle

A cozy autumn escape to a charming New England town on a quest waterfront? Sign me up.
I can see why Katherine Hepburn loved Old Saybrook, Connecticut, her whole life. For more than 150 years, Saybrook Point, where the Connecticut River meets Long Island Sound, has accommodated travelers, and the newly renovated Saybrook Point Resort & Marina continues that legacy of hospitality. Here’s the house tour of my room, or you can luxuriate in a private cottage with a butler. Or literally inside the lighthouse.

The first time I went to @pickerel_ri I felt like I was just let in on some PVD IYKYK inner circle. It was cool, full of cool people, including staff from other cool restaurants. Despite feeling woefully out-cooled at this tiny, Japanese izakaya-inspired noodle bar meets bar-bar, I soldiered on for my latest for @ediblerhody
My first time there, I hadn’t planned on ordering a Caesar salad, not until I saw their legendary unorthodox version — a fluffy tower that reveals shredded green cabbage dressed in tangy yuzu that’s unbelievable and a longtime staple.
Owners Scott LaChapelle and Spencer Smith have journeyed to Japan’s farthest corners to explore its traditional noodle bars to shape their menus, offering something like few others in Rhode Island. And with the extraordinary talent of pastry chef Millie Joslyn, Pickerel should be your next visit. Learn more in the latest issue of edible Rhody, on newsstands now. by @newportstyle

Birkin who? by @newportstyle

Earlier this week, I got to spend the morning with James Davids and Marisa Stashenko, stewards of Sakonnet Vineyard, on the eve of the harvest. After walking the fields, I can report that the fruit looks plump and robust, with every indication of an impressive tonnage collected for their 2026 portfolio.
While there, I was tried some of last year’s stunners, including a new fav, Early Harvest, an off-dry white that’s a bright and crisp expression of the vineyard’s vidal blanc (that, as the name suggests, was harvested early compared to the rest of the fruit).
Their 2025 estate vidal blanc, dry and medium bodied with fruity notes from pineapple, melon, and orange blossom, is another standout, while their “Patchwork” bottle is, as the name hints, a patchwork of vidal blanc, chardonnay, pinot gris and gewürztraminer.
I’ve been calling 2016 the year of chilled reds, and @sakonnetwine “Chanbrusco” is an unexpected sparkling red made from their estate grown Chancellor grapes — still dry, but fizzy and fun while giving pet nat vibes. Stop by for a tasting soon and bottoms up to a successful harvest! by @newportstyle

‘Tis the season of the weekend escape — an uncomplicated, close-enough to home adventure that’s part cozy, part culture, and of course, part culinary. I wrote about the @innhastingspark in Lexington, Mass. for @rimonthly — the only @relaischateaux in Greater Boston, that gives quintessential “autumn in New England” vibes. 🍂 by @newportstyle

Every year the @audrainconcours outdoes itself! I remember when this event was just an idea, now it’s a marquee event that attracts more than just car enthusiasts — and from across the country. Vroom, vroom🏎️ by @newportstyle

Local New England seafood meets Mediterranean vision at Ostra, the beloved dining hot spot in Boston’s Back Bay. I love: a menu that competes for my attention, a white tablecloth dining experience that’s sophisticated but not stuffy, and when you just can’t pick what was your favorite dish of the night. @ostraboston is, in a word, sexy — chic dining room with massively high ceilings, a classic head-turning dish (a Branzino, deboned and filleted table-side — something rare to find these days) and a thoughtful seasonal cocktail list + curated wine list, with N/A options that weren’t an afterthought.
Some favorites pictured here: house made fingerling potato and onion ciabatta bread, Hamachi crudo, crispy oysters, saffron-rich “Valenciana-style” paella, roasted Monkfish, pepper-crusted salmon, and desserts including apple tart, chocolate torte, and an affogato that I’m still dreaming about!
Oh, and the signature caviar martini has given me a new delusional tax bracket identity. by @newportstyle

LPM has been one of the most anticipated restaurant openings in Boston in quite some time. Short for “Le Petit Maison,” the restaurant officially opened today, but I got a sneak peek last week and was able to experience what has earned this globally-adored restaurant its enviable reputation. (Boston is @lpmrestaurants first foray into the Northeast and its second U.S. location, after Miami. Its Abu Dhabi and Dubai are some of the restaurant’s most popular in addition to the London flagship). With head chef Gabriela Guitron’s talent on display (on this night with chef Anthony Hervé), we dove head first into the French Mediterranean menu — with a kiss of Italian influence, including:
• LPM’s signature Poivrons Marinés à l’Huile d’Olive (marinated sweet peppers)
• Oscietra caviar with crème fraîche, red onions, crispy capers and blinis
• Poulpe finement tranché (thinly sliced octopus medallions with lemon and green chili dressing - unbelievable)
• Carpaccio de Sériole du Japon (Yellowtail carpaccio)
• Escargots de Bourgogne (I inhaled the garlic butter before I even took a bite)
• House-made gnocchi à la tomate fraîche (gives North End gnocchi a run for its money)
• Crevettes Tièdes à l’Huile d’Olive (warm prawns with olive oil and lemon juice)
• Bar du Chili Grillé (grilled Chilean bass with an amazing chilii and lemon confit)
• Marinated lamb chops…and more

There’s also the Tomatini, LPM’s signature savory cocktail made with muddled Campari tomatoes, Ketel One vodka, and aged white balsamic vinegar, garnished with a salt-and-pepper-dipped cherry tomato then finished table-side with pepper from a dramatically long, artful pepper grinder. (There’s also the NA version, the Tomati-No.)
The wine list is exceptional and dessert, which this night left us wanting for nothing, included an apple tart with vanilla ice cream, chocolate mousse with malt ice cream, and vanilla cheesecake with a berry compote.
Located inside the Four Seasons One Dalton, @lpmboston is open for breakfast and dinner, with lunch service starting mid-October. by @newportstyle

While the country continues to commemorate America’s 250th, Lexington, Massachusetts, is like, “been there, done that.” The town, known as the “Birthplace of American Liberty,” marked the semiquincentennial of the Battle of Lexington last year. But the Inn at Hastings Park, just steps from Lexington Battle Green where the “shot heard round the world” was fired, has long leaned into its historic sense of place.
Just in time for iconic New England foliage, cozy rolled neck sweaters, hayrides, and hands cupped around a hot apple cider, I highlighted just some of what makes historic @innhastingspark so special for @rimonthly — and the inn’s @townmeetingbistro Rhode Island connection. As always, thank you @jamiecoelho

“Treat yo’ self” is a mantra you may have heard me (and @susanneday ) repeat many times over, quoting Parks and Rec besties Donna Meagle and Tom Haverford (see stories for proof). But the “treat economy” is in full force —
the notion that one deserves a little treat even when feeling the financial squeeze. It’s not a new concept; consumers have historically splurged on modest luxuries during times of economic uncertainty, sometimes called the “lipstick effect” or more recently, “treatonomics.”
ARE YOU TREATING YOURSELF, AND IF SO, WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO TREAT AND FROM WHERE?
Recent research shows 62% of Americans indulge in small, affordable treats at least once a month, and just about the same percentage make that spend in the food and beverage category. When a full tank of gas is over $90 (see my photo I took last night), and a casual dinner for two can easily top $100, many are trading pricey nights out for little self-indulgences, like lattes, matchas, a single bottle of good wine, and gourmet goods to cook with at home. I break it all down in this story for @bostonglobe

Catch me in the hot seat this Thursday morning! It’s a complete role reversal as Erin Donovan-Boyle, president and CEO of the Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce, interviews me on the spot (and I don’t see the questions in advance😬). Renewed appreciation for the sources I interview officially unlocked. Thank you @ladykatiegg for organizing🙌
