Does soda really stop a bleeding fish?
For years, many anglers believed pouring a soft drink on a bleeding fish helped stop the bleeding.
Science finally put that idea to the test.
Researchers compared fish treated with:
🥤 Coca-Cola
🥤 Mountain Dew
💧 Carbonated lake water
💧 Untreated lake water
The result?
There was no measurable difference in how long the fish bled.
Researchers also found that acidic soft drinks may damage delicate gill tissue, while removing the fish from the water adds additional stress.
Science doesn't stand still.
Neither should fish care.
Over the next few weeks, we'll explore what research is teaching us about fish bleeding—and why it's changing the way anglers think about fish care.

Read the Fish
Have you ever noticed bass swim back to the bank after a tournament weigh-in?
Many anglers think the fish is confused.
It's not.
The fish is trying to recover from oxygen stress.
Why the bank?
🐟 Two reasons.
💨 Oxygen.
The water's surface is where oxygen enters the lake through atmospheric diffusion. During the day, aquatic plants are also producing oxygen through photosynthesis, making shallow surface water one of the most oxygen-rich places in the lake.
🪨 Support.
Fish use energy just to stay upright. By nosing into the bank, they can actually use the bottom of the lake for support while they recover and actively gape for oxygen.
It's no different than sitting down after a hard workout.
So if you see fish nosing into the shoreline after they're released...
Leave them alone.
They're exactly where they want to be.
The better question is...
Why did they need to recover in the first place?
That answer starts with good fish care from the moment the first fish goes into your livewell.
👇 Have you seen bass nose into the bank after a tournament? What did you think they were doing?

Fish Care Misconception #2
💭 "Warm water always contains less dissolved oxygen than cool water."
Not necessarily.
While warm water has a lower capacity to hold oxygen, that doesn't always mean it contains less oxygen.
As the sun rises...
🌿 Aquatic plants begin producing oxygen through photosynthesis.
🌬️ Wind increases surface mixing, helping oxygen move from the atmosphere into the water.
By mid to late afternoon, many lakes and reservoirs have their highest dissolved oxygen levels of the day. Under the right conditions, surface waters can even become supersaturated.
💡 Here's the takeaway:
Don't be afraid to slowly exchange some of your livewell water with fresh lake water during the day. That oxygen-rich surface water can help create a healthier environment for your fish.
The key is to make water exchanges gradually to avoid shocking fish with sudden changes in temperature or water quality.
The more we understand how lakes work, the better we can protect the fish that make our sport possible.
👇 Question:
Have you always avoided adding lake water in the afternoon because it was warmer?

🎣 Fish Care Myth #1
"Cooler water always contains more oxygen."
Not exactly.
A more accurate statement is:
💧 Cooler water has the potential to hold more dissolved oxygen.
But oxygen doesn't magically appear in water. There has to be a source.
Here's something many anglers don't realize:
🌅 Just before sunrise, lakes and reservoirs are often at their lowest dissolved oxygen levels of the day.
Why?
Throughout the night:
⬇️ Fish consume oxygen
⬇️ Aquatic plants consume oxygen
⬇️ Algae consume oxygen
At the same time, photosynthesis—the process that produces oxygen—stops when the sun goes down.
The result?
You may be filling your livewell with cooler water, but not necessarily water with the highest dissolved oxygen levels.
Does that mean filling early is a bad idea?
Not at all.
Cooler water can help reduce fish stress. Just remember that temperature and dissolved oxygen are not the same thing.
✅ Run your aerators.
✅ Maintain good water circulation.
✅ Take advantage of your morning run across the lake.
The V-T2 Livewell Ventilation System helps promote air exchange and supports your livewell's ability to reach and maintain healthy oxygen levels while helping remove harmful metabolic gases.
The more we understand fish care, the better we can protect the fisheries we love.
🎣 Healthy fish don't happen by accident.
👇 Did you know dissolved oxygen is often lowest just before sunrise?

🎣☀️ If it's hot for you, what's it like in your livewell?
Most anglers know when the summer heat becomes uncomfortable.
But rising water temperatures can be even tougher on your catch.
As water warms:
⬇️ Oxygen levels decrease
⬆️ Fish stress increases
⬆️ Metabolic waste and harmful gases build up
That's why serious anglers install the V-T2 Livewell Ventilation System.
✅ Promotes continuous air exchange
✅ Helps release harmful metabolic gases
✅ Supports healthier livewell conditions
✅ Natural evaporative cooling effect
✅ No electricity. No moving parts.
Because fish care isn't just about conservation.
It's about protecting the resource and protecting your tournament day.
🎣 Healthy fish swim away stronger.

Happy Earth Day!
There’s nothing like a bass blowing up on topwater at sunrise.
But moments like that don’t exist without clean water.
They don’t exist without conservation.
Bass anglers have always understood this—
protect the habitat, and the fish will thrive.
That’s why we:
✔ Respect the resource
✔ Practice catch & release
✔ Speak up for clean water
Because it’s not just about today’s catch…
it’s about tomorrow’s opportunity.
🌎 Earth Day is every day on the water.
