🚀 TAKING TO THE STAGE AT @newscientistlive NEW SCIENTIST LIVE! 🌍✈️

The Future Needs You. And the Future Needs Opportunity.

What an incredible honour to take to the stage at New Scientist Live 2026, ExCeL London, representing @uoceanproject Heights of Possibility (HOPE) and @vayyufoundation .

Alongside @aerosparxrob we brought a powerful message to one of the UK’s leading science events:

🌍 Conservation – Inspiring the next generation to protect our planet.

✈️ Aviation – Breaking down barriers and opening the skies to young people from all backgrounds.

🚀 Social Mobility – Proving that your circumstances should never determine your potential.

💙 Opportunity – Creating life-changing experiences that turn ambition into possibility.

From our exhibition stand and BGA gliding simulator to engaging with thousands of visitors, young minds, industry leaders and the media, this has been an extraordinary platform for HOPE.

We aren’t simply inspiring the next generation to dream about the future. We’re giving them the opportunity to shape it.

A huge thank you to our Vayyu Foundation team, Rob, Eric, the British Gliding Association, Move the Youth and everyone who helped make this possible.

The future doesn’t belong to those with the greatest privilege. It belongs to those given the opportunity to rise.

And we’re only just getting started. 🚀

On Sunday, we took to the @newscientistlive stage at ExCeL London to present “Inside Your Mind: Turning Brainwaves into Art”, exploring how neuroscience, art, and technology can open up new possibilities for creativity and accessibility.

This time, we turned brain activity into a painting!

Using EEG and a brain-computer interface (BCI) @choosemuse , we invited @pre_silent to draw using his brain signals. We measured his brain activity as he listened to different types of music to identify which helped him relax the most. The BCI then translated these signals into two measures: relaxation and cognitive load (how hard his brain was working).

These measures controlled the axes of a digital canvas, allowing him to create a painting by changing his mental state. His brain became the artist’s tool, turning brain signals into art 🧠

But the possibilities go beyond creating art. Together with @pre_silent , we also discussed how neuroscience and technology could help make music spaces more inclusive and accessible, opening up new ways for people to experience music and express themselves.

A huge thank you to @newscientistlive for having us, and to everyone who joined us, participated, and shared their curiosity 🤟🏻

Nothing better than looking out at a sea of families and young science enthusiasts, and sharing my passion for dinosaurs. Or in this case, given the acoustics of the room, more like shouting it! Sorry to those in the audience who burst their eardrums. But thank you @newscientistlive and congrats on putting on such an engaging and fun weekend, with so many cool exhibits and speakers. See you again I hope!

⬇️Careers advice from presenters @newscientistlive ⬇️

• No one was where they expected to be. Things change.
• Aiming for a job you want is difficult. Aiming for an area you are interested is better
• For Women, don’t just look at % of an organisations employees that are women when deciding, look at how welcoming/supportive the environment is.
• You will have setbacks & failures. Some will turn out to be essential moments of reflection/redirection
• Family & friends have advice, not answers.
• The job you want now might not exist in 10 years and the job you get might be unimaginable now.
• The sciences are not as discrete as school make them. Interdisciplinary work is common.
• The most important qualification is the one related to your interests
• Maths! Maths, maths, maths. Whatever area of STEM you want to be in try and improve your maths ability.
• There are more routes into careers than ever before. Apprenticeships are highly valued.
• AI is changing work but not necessarily removing it. What we do is shifting.
• Invest in discovering what you like. Attend events, ask questions, send emails.
• Build a skillset not just a list of grades. by @newscientistlive

Family day out at @newscientistlive in London. What fun! Thanks to my pals @newscientist for inviting me to speak about dinosaurs and birds on the family stage. And thanks to the partner bookshop @waterstones for stocking so many of our books, not only The Story of Birds, but a few of the children’s books @annebrusatte has written. We signed a bunch!

We packed so much in. Anthony loved the popup planetarium and robots and virtual reality tour of the universe and the tractors and helicopters and so much more. And we saw some old friends like @volctennis and ran into my former masters student Thomas Cowgill and caught up with New Scientist friends @rowhoop and @penny.sarchet (thanks for having me on the podcast last week by the way).

And stay tuned: I’ll have a new article in the New Scientist magazine soon. On some of the most remarkable and ludicrous dinosaurs, living in the most unexpected place, at the most unexpected time…
