NEW WAVE is a love letter to rebels, outcasts, and club kids.

Since premiering at Tribeca, NEW WAVE has traveled to almost 200 screenings around the world, partnering with community organizations, universities, museums, theaters, and cultural institutions to build programming and conversations around identity, memory, subculture, and Vietnamese and Asian diaspora communities.

That journey helped shape what THE POST GEN is becoming. We tell stories and build worlds around people living, creating, and dancing on the margins, and we believe a film can be the beginning of a much larger cultural life.

Our team set out to make a film and somehow, over the years, NEW WAVE became a book, a zine, an archive, playlists, educational resources, a gathering place, workshops, and countless conversations that continued long after the credits rolled.

As the film prepares for its next chapter on streaming (more info soon!), director @elizabeth_ai is carrying that experience forward through THE POST GEN. The Post Gen a cultural studio for films, publishing, archives, public programs, collaborations, and the people behind them.

The Post Gen grew from something NEW WAVE taught us: a film does not have to mark the end of a production cycle. It can become the beginning of new relationships, new forms, and new possibilities. In the coming months, we’ll share more about what we’re building, the projects already in motion, and new ways to collaborate.

To the filmmakers, artists, archivists, educators, writers, and cultural workers in our community carrying an idea that wants to become something larger: we’d love to hear from you. 💕 by @newwavedoc

WE DID IT!!! We made a movie!!! 😭😭😭

Still racing to get to the @tribeca world premiere this Saturday but had to stop and catch my breath a moment to thank these beautiful humans who helped bring this story to life. Hundreds more to thank so you can bet I’ll be doing that for the rest of my life.

It’s been a long time coming, but I’m celebrating that New Wave✨ by The Post Gen (@the_post_gen) is officially streaming on Criterion Channel (@criterioncollection)!

New Wave follows a generation of Vietnamese Americans caught between the trauma of war and displacement and the contradictions of American pop culture, and how they forged their own synth-pop subculture out of it. I wasn’t an 80s New Waver myself, but this film has given me more than I ever expected.

Last year, I had the privilege of serving as the film’s publicist on its journey to commercial distribution, and I still can’t believe this day is here. Thank you to filmmaker & generational talent Elizabeth Ai (@elizabeth_ai) not just for making something this beautiful, but for embracing a freshly graduated Viet girl who’d spent her whole life waiting to see multi-faceted stories like hers on the big screen. I’m so proud to call you a friend, mentor, and lifelong cheerleader in my corner.

From my very first media placement as a baby PR specialist to the incredible New Wave community I’ve met along the way, I owe so much to Elizabeth and this film. It’s made me laugh and cry every time I’ve watched it (don’t ask how many times that is). More than that, it grew my relationship with my parents & helped me better understand their journeys in defining what being American meant to them on their own terms.
