We are thrilled to introduce you to the 2026–27 Kickstart Cohort! Ari Angkasa (@ari___angkasa) Kyle Archie Knight (@kylearchieknight) Tanya Cubric (@tcubric) Thang Do (@thangdo_thangdo) Jag (@trilljag) Jingwen Jina He (@miss_stingray) Justin Enrico Legaspi (@justin.enrico.l ) Ming Liew (@mingliew_art) Kerith Manderson-Galvin (@unofficialkerithfanclub) Carmen Yih (@hitahhchi) Over 18 months, they will receive mentorship, production and curatorial support, alongside opportunities for feedback, peer exchange and professional development as they develop new work and extend their practices. As if that wasn't enough exciting news: for the first time since 2018, Kickstart will culminate in a major public platform: 'Micro Wave', a new biennial festival launching in November 2027! The inaugural Micro Wave festival will transform Next Wave's home at Brunswick Mechanics Institute and the surrounding neighbourhood into a site for experimentation, exchange and encounter — connecting artists with audiences, industry, neighbours and creative communities. ✨👏✨👏✨👏✨👏✨👏✨👏✨👏 The 2026–27 Kickstart program is supported by Cardinia Shire Council, supporting Jag and Jingwen Jina He, and Wyndham City Council, supporting Justin Enrico Legaspi and Ming Liew. Next Wave operates Brunswick Mechanics Institute with the support of Merri-bek City Council. We'll share more details soon. A new exhibition is coming to Next Wave in October >> Kat Kats' 'What more do you want from me' is a deeply compelling and radical act of exposure, exploring trauma, invisible disability, and the impacts of childhood sexual abuse. The artist’s personal phone photo archive has been transformed into a participatory installation that challenges conventional modes of spectatorship and authorship. Kat Kats is a versatile artist with experience in stage writing, live art, festival curation, and visual art installations. What more do you want from me marks a bold and significant evolution in her practice, from text-based performance to large-scale visual installation. Come. Witness. Share. Take. Last week we officially launched Kickstart 2026–27 – welcoming 10 outstanding emerging artists to the program and announcing a new biennial festival: 'Micro Wave'. ✨This Thursday, 6pm✨ at @next_wave, join @elysegoldfinch_ and I for a conversation about my current exhibition ‘Art is not going to help this town.’ I’ll be sharing the stories behind my 3 short films, what it was like hand-processing the last reel of Super 8 film mere days before the show opened, plus my militant agenda to see a high-speed aerial tramway constructed in @wyndham_city as a solution to chronic road congestion. Jks! I want to talk about being a working class artist, and how do we navigate the performance of class identity in art? We’ll see how we go for time — this event is, after all, very close to dinner time.
