Tune in Thu 7/16 at 8pm ET (or on demand after) to catch our chat with Kate Hall and Chris Bishop of Love? said the Commander.This is some of the strongest music out there - which they refer to as ‘maximal minimalism’ and I have to say, that’s an apt description.And there’s a very cool element to this week’s episode - they wrote a song, just for us! And we got to select the topic, so of course we ask them to write about our fav 10 days of the year: Musikfest! I haven’t heard the song yet, so tune in and let’s listen to it together! And you just might find your next favorite band along the way. Don’t miss it!I’ve heard tracks from Love? said the Commander consistently on Dan Drago’s 25 O’Clock Pod pretty regularly over the years. And every time it always caught my ear, and tug at my emotions. I suppose that’s where the genre label “emo” truly comes from.At some point, when I heard another one of their brilliant songs, I just said “alright, that’s it. I’ve gotta have them on the show”. And reached out to Kate Hall and Chris Bishop and we started to plan for it.Then they pitched me this great idea - they do this thing called Secret Songs where you can engage with them to use their talents to write a song for something or someone special. You just provide them with the prompts and some key details to include lyrically. So they offered to do that for the show and, if I was down, to have me hear it for the first time live during the broadcast.Naturally I asked them to write about the show’s love and connection to ... Musikfest! Especially with that right around the corner. And so I gave them all the details around the Exordium, the Picks of the Platz, the Aw Shucks corn, the mugs, and so on. BtS: Wheatus interview highlight - What makes the “OH YEAH!” moment in “Teenage Dirtbag” so awesomeWe recently had on Wheatus for an installment of our Behind the Sound series of episodes to dive in to how the achieve their iconic sound. Towards the end of the episode (the set closer if you will) we dove in to their flagship song “Teenage Dirtbag”. I had 3 questions I wanted to get their take on:1. the inspiration behind Brendan B Brown’s voice affectation (you won’t believe the two people he’s merging for that!)2. he opens the song with different guitar riffs, which was on display during the sound check portion of the Behind the Sound - so what are they? (prog rock for the win!)3. the “OH YEAH!” moment has been exhilarating since the first time I heard it in my 20s and still hits hard now, thirty years later - what about the songwriting does that?In this snippet, we hear BBB’s answer to the third part. Lia Menaker interview highlight - backstory on writing “Stranger” and the stunning videoWe recently had on Lia Menaker for a “part 2” episode since the first one had such great banter, we just stayed with it and invited her back mid-episode to tell her story and share her journey. The second one did not disappoint either - another fantastic banter and another wonderful live performance!In this snippet, we dive in to the moment where she basically gave up music for a “normal life” and she was working at the CDC in Atlanta. But everything felt disingenuous and so she sat, as she often does when she needed to process things, and wrote a song about her feelings. “Stranger” is what came out of it, and she reached out to a prior class mate to see if they’d like to choreograph a routine for the video, and it took flight from there.Needless to say, Lia left that career to return to music, and we are all grateful for this song helping her find her way back to this path, and it is certainly the one for her.Hope you enjoy the selection, the full interview, the prior episode and Lia’s entire catalog. The first time was such a great convo but was more about concepts - important and deep topics. And it was great! But we want to hear more about her journey and her inspirations. And she’ll play live again! Don’t miss it.When we had Lia Menaker on back in October, we had out traditional episode format planned and ready, but a combination of some things going on in her life that were connected to her recent release “I’m Still Here” and a perfect synergy with guest co-host Galen Deery, we ended up just talking about things like heartbreak and hurt, and processing things. At about 32 mins in to that one, I realized the banter was just too good, and shelved the research and ditched the traditional format and asked Lia if she’d come back on so we could stay with the “concepts” chat.It was a great episode and so worth checking out, but felt we needed to honor Lia’s journey and tell her story so this episode will stay disciplined on that. Like learning about her time at the CDC and how that shaped her worldview.We’ll be joined once again by Galen Deery as guest co-host. Can’t wait! Orillia interview highlight - singular inspiration and an evolving songwriting processWe recently had Andrew Marczak and Peach from Orillia on for a terrific talk and exploration of their music and journey.In this snippet, we touch on his songwriting process, and how it was originally based on being inspired to write all in one sitting and without feeling like he was putting his own impressions on the art - which has actually happened a number of times for him! When we took a listen to Orillia for the first time, we knew we were on a ride down a new road and were going to enjoy every turn.We’re joined by frontman and songwriter Andrew Marczak and his collaborator, harmonizer and partner Peach for a dive in to their backstories and across their music catalog.Under his moniker Orillia, Andrew Marczak follows the long tradition of folk music’s more progressive stewards, commanding audiences with his unique bracing tenor and skeletal arrangements. With 2 albums under his belt, he has toured across the US, Canada, and Europe, and currently resides in Chicago with his partner and collaborator, Peach. We had such a blast reminiscing about buried treasures from bands during that era, and what it was like to hear some of that iconic music for the first time.In this snippet, Jacob shares some behind the scenes details on his first viral video that started it all - which was dedicated to “Smells Like Teen Spirit” from Nirvana.Did you know that he didn’t mean for it to be like a silent movie?
