Pain gets our attention… but it doesn’t always tell the whole story 🔍

One of the biggest misconceptions about pain is that where you feel it is automatically where the problem started

Sometimes a tight neck is compensating for a stiff upper back
Sometimes knee pain has more to do with the hip or ankle than the knee itself
Sometimes the painful area is simply working the hardest

That’s why every evaluation starts with one question:

**Why is this happening?**

When we understand the *why*, we can create a treatment plan that doesn’t just help you feel better, it helps you move better and stay better 💪🏼

We often see that it’s only when pain shows up that we slow down and are forced to pay attention to ourselves.

Taking care of yourself doesn’t have to start there.

A little time to prioritize yourself is never wasted. It helps you show up better for everything else. (Learning this the hard way myself!)

If you’re waiting for the perfect time to get back into movement… this is your reminder that it probably won’t look perfect 😂

Do what you can. Start where you are.

It still counts 💪🏼

“I’ve tried stretching my back, but the tightness always comes back.”

I hear this all the time.

Stretching your low back can feel good, but if it keeps getting tight, it’s worth looking at what’s happening around it, too.

Your low back doesn’t work in isolation. Your hips and upper back play a role in how much movement and work your low back has to handle.

This is why we always look ABOVE and BELOW the point of pain, and not just the pain point itself.

So instead of always stretching the spot that hurts, ask:

Does my upper back move well?
Do my hips move well?

Sometimes the answer isn’t more stretching. It’s figuring out why your low back keeps having to work so hard.

Does this sound like you? Let me know in the comments 👇🏼 taken in Next Level PT & Wellness by @nextlevelptnj

I see far too many people pushing themselves into harder and harder core exercises when they haven’t mastered the basics yet.

They’re holding their breath.
Pushing their belly out.
Arching through their low back.
Using their hip flexors and back muscles to do the work.

But because they can do the harder variation, they assume they must be getting stronger.

Harder doesn’t always mean better.

If you have low back pain, start with something simple. Can you breathe?
Can you keep your core engaged?
Can you control the movement without your back or pelvis taking over?
If not, make it easier.

There’s nothing wrong with modifying. In fact, sometimes less is exactly what you need.

Master the basics first. Then build from there.

If you’re dealing with low back pain and feel like you’ve tried everything, DM me. Let’s figure out what you actually need 😊 taken in Next Level PT & Wellness by @nextlevelptnj

I ran today.

My first postpartum run. Tommy is almost 14 months old.

And did it feel good? Truthfully… no.

But somehow, it also felt great.

This summer, I took a little step back from Instagram. I wanted to be more present. To spend less time documenting/posting and more time actually living.

And in that space, I started thinking about how often we put conditions on ourselves.

I’ll start running when I’m stronger.
I’ll work out when I have more time.
I’ll feel better when I’m back to my “old body.”
I’ll be happy when I’m faster.

I’ve done this with running for years.

I was scared of how slow I would be. Scared of the numbers. Scared of how much work it would take to feel “good enough” again.

There was a time when I became so intimidated by my pace after recovering from a surgery that I stopped running altogether. Somewhere along the way, I lost the joy of running because I was too focused on being a “good” runner.

Today, I decided I don’t want to do that anymore.

I got on the treadmill and I moved my body.

I didn’t look at my pace.
I didn’t share it on Strava.
I just ran.

And it was freeing.

This time, I don’t want to chase a number. I want to chase a lifetime of being healthy. Of moving my body. Of taking care of my mental health. Of showing my son that his mom is strong and healthy, and can keep up with him when he comes running after her.

Maybe I’ll get faster. Maybe I won’t. Maybe I’ll run another half one day. Maybe I won’t.

This time, I don’t want my enjoyment of running to depend on how fast I am.

This is a big part of why I love what I do as a PT. I don’t want my patients to spend months waiting until they’re “strong enough” or “ready enough” to get back to the things they love. I want to help them figure out where they are now, start there, and build from it.

Running is running.

A runner is a runner.

And today, I ran. 🏃‍♀️

If you can relate, I’m so glad you’re here. Send me a message and let’s figure out where to start 🩷 taken in Next Level PT & Wellness by @nextlevelptnj

You don’t have to be injured to work with a physical therapist👏

Yes, physical therapy can help you recover from an injury or get out of pain… but that’s not all we can do

Maybe you want to:

💪 Feel stronger
🏃‍♀️ Get back into working out
✨ Move with more confidence
🎯 Train for a specific goal
🧠 Stop feeling like you have to figure it all out on your own

That’s where we can help!

Our goal isn’t just to help you get out of pain. It’s to help you feel confident in your body and get back to doing the things you love

You don’t need to be “injured enough” to deserve support!

Before making your core exercises harder, take a step back and ask yourself:

✔️ Are you holding your breath?
✔️ Is your belly pushing outward?
✔️ Can you keep your trunk steady as your arms and legs move?
✔️ Does your back arch?
✔️ Do you feel the effort where you should, or are your neck, shoulders, or low back taking over?

As physical therapists, we often see people jump to more advanced exercises before they’ve mastered the basics. The problem is, if your body is compensating during a simple exercise, making it harder usually reinforces those same compensation patterns.

That’s why we often start with exercises that look deceptively simple.

The goal isn’t just to complete the movement, but to perform it with good control, steady breathing, and the right muscles doing the work. Once you have that foundation, progressing your exercises becomes much more effective.

Sometimes, less really is more.
