Miss Niyom Chiwasuwan, a 17-year-old girl who lived near Wat Ratchakhru in Bang Yi Ruea. In 1942, during a severe cholera outbreak, her life was cut short.

Because her local temple had no cemetery, her father brought her to be buried at Wat Bang Sakae Nok, where she was laid to rest alongside 70–80 other victims of the epidemic.

Years later, in 1955, the temple held a cemetery clearing—but her father refused to have her body removed. Again in 1960, another clearing took place… and this time, her body was exhumed.

What they found shocked everyone.

Her body had not decomposed.

With no relatives coming forward, and following guidance from a Chinese fortune teller, the temple placed her in a small shrine.

Not long after, stories began to spread.

A local woman claimed Miss Niyom appeared in her dreams, giving her lottery numbers… and when she played them, she won.

Word spread quickly, and “Miss Niyom” soon became known as Goddess Niyom.

Today, people visit her seeking luck in love, business, and life. Offerings of traditional Thai clothing, jewelry, and scented powder are brought to her shrine—and if wishes are granted, some return to perform traditional dances in her honor, often wearing damask roses behind their ears, said to be her favorite.

Some believe completely.

Others come just to see for themselves.

🥊 wearing Muay Thai shorts to the gym then walking home after or running errands — often sparks genuine moments with locals. There’s an instant enthusiasm, a shared understanding rooted in mutual respect for Muay Thai culture.

Muay Thai isn’t just a sport. It’s a disciplined art of hand-to-hand combat, deeply woven into Thailand’s history — something many take immense pride in.

Wearing Muay Thai shorts is never about intimidation. It’s a signal of respect. It says that regardless of who you are, your strength, or your athletic ability, you honor the craft and choose self-improvement — mentally and physically. And in Thailand, that mindset is always welcomed

📍@panee__sticky_rice is one of those hidden local spots in Chom Thong that feels like stepping into a quieter side of Bangkok 🥥🍚✨

Set right along the canal, the whole place has a simple charm to it — calm water beside you, old neighborhood energy, and a beautiful view that makes sitting down here feel different from anywhere in the city. Every now and then, the train rolls by in the background, adding to the atmosphere and making the whole experience even more memorable 🚆🌿

Soft sticky rice, rich coconut milk, and a traditional recipe that keeps people coming back — proof that some of Bangkok’s best spots are still the ones tucked away in everyday neighborhoods.

Unpopular opinion: 90% of tourists in Bangkok visit the EXACT same overrated places and leave thinking the city is too crowded 🫣

Bangkok is a completely different city when you stop falling for tourist traps:

❌ Khao San Road ➔ ✅ Ban Tad Thong Road
Stop drinking $1 buckets surrounded by tourist crowds. Ban Tad Thong is where Bangkok’s actual foodies go for Michelin Bib Gourmand street food and late-night dessert spots.

❌ Damnoen Saduak ➔ ✅ Khlong Lat Mayom
Don’t waste 3+ hours in a car for a commercialized trap with $50 boat fees. Khlong Lat Mayom is 20 mins from downtown, completely authentic, and boat rides cost ~$3 USD.

❌ Mega Skybars ➔ ✅ Eagle Nest Bar
Skip paying $25 for a cocktail in a crowded skyscraper with strict dress codes. Eagle Nest sits right on the river with an unbeatable, front-row sunset view of Wat Arun.

You’ve probably seen Thao Wessuwan at BKK Airport… but did you know there’s an 8-meter-tall one just 10 minutes from ICONSIAM? 👀

Standing at Wat Suttharam in Khlong San, this towering guardian is one of the temple’s most striking sights. Thao Wessuwan is traditionally associated with protection, prosperity, and warding off evil, and many people come here to pray and seek blessings for success and good fortune.

📍 Wat Suttharam, Khlong San, Bangkok

A lesser-known stop on the Thonburi side of Bangkok that’s worth adding to your list if you’re exploring around ICONSIAM.

Have you ever explored the hidden side of Bangkok’s famous Golden Mount? 🤫✨

While most travelers climb the 300+ steps of Wat Saket just for the panoramic skyline views and the glittering rooftop chedi, few venture deep into the complex to discover its more secluded corners—including the mesmerizing cave shrines and hidden grottoes tucked away at the base and within the mountain.

Stepping into these cool, cavernous spaces to find sacred Buddha statues glowing in the candlelight feels like stepping completely out of bustling modern Bangkok and into another century. 🕯️🙏

Save this post for your next Thailand itinerary, and drop a 🏔️ in the comments if you’ve made the climb up Wat Saket yet!

300 years of Halal culture in Bangkok — and today, that story looks a little different. 🌯

Shawarma Bros @shawarmabrosbkk brings a modern take on halal food in Bangkok, with protein-packed shawarma, falafel, and loaded sweet potato fries.

The Falafel Crispy Wrap, Classic Combo Chicken Shawarma, and Loaded-Up Chicken Sweet Potato Fries were all packed with protein, full of flavor, and absolutely satisfying.

Just a 4-minute walk from Terminal 21 and Asok BTS, making it an easy stop when exploring Asok and Sukhumvit.

If chicken shawarma, falafel, Middle Eastern flavors, and Bangkok food are on the list, this one is worth a stop. 🌯

While exploring Dao Khanong, a historic district of Thonburi along the Chao Phraya River, I came across something unexpected behind a broken gate at Wat Dao Khanong.

Inside the temple cemetery were ancient stupas that have survived centuries of change — including the fall of Ayutthaya and the transition into the Thonburi era around 250 years ago.

These ruins are a reminder of how much older Thonburi’s history is than modern Bangkok, with remnants of earlier communities and Buddhist traditions still scattered throughout the district today.

Follow @nextstop.daily for more of Bangkok’s history, culture, local communities, and places most visitors never see and how you can make sure not to miss it yourself.

⛩️ From unexpected torii gates at Chao Mae Tubtim shrines to authentic izakaya experiences, Bangkok has plenty of Japanese influences waiting to be discovered. 🇯🇵🇹🇭

Thailand has a long history of Japanese connections, from historic Japanese settlements to influences found throughout the country.

Tucked away on Thonglor Soi 14, Ant’z Izakaya @antz_thonglor recreates the atmosphere of a night out in Japan, with a cozy setting and a menu built around unique, homestyle izakaya dishes.

Standouts include the refreshing signature peach-soaked tomato and tender roasted chicken drenched in savory gravy.

After discovering some of the lesser-known Japanese connections around Thailand, this was a food experience that genuinely stood out — both for the flavors and the atmosphere — and one that comes highly recommended for anyone looking for a Japanese dining experience in Bangkok.
