This week with Senuri, a woman who made history! 🏄🏼‍♀️🤙🏼

She couldn't afford a surfboard.
Today, she represents her country. 🇱🇰

Senuri Madushani's surfing journey began at 14 in Sri Lanka. She would watch tourists surf and, when they took a break, asked if she could borrow their boards. Her family couldn't afford one of their own. She even got discarded, broken boards from local repair shops and tried to practise on them.

Surfing wasn't something girls in her village did. Her father, a fisherman and surfer himself, initially didn't support it either. He saw surfing as a man's sport and hoped his daughter would follow a more traditional path.
But Senuri continued.

A turning point came when a young Australian surfer left her a surfboard and a note encouraging her to keep going.✨

In 2024, Senuri competed at the Asian Surfing Championship in the Maldives, becoming the first Sri Lankan woman to compete internationally in surfing.
She has also reached the semi-finals of Red Bull's Ride My Wave, placed second and third at national women's competitions in 2024 and 2025, and is now Sri Lanka's second-ever certified female surf instructor.

Her father now supports her and shares his knowledge of the sea with her.

Senuri didn't just find her place in the water. She became the first woman to represent Sri Lanka there internationally. 🌊

Senuri entered a space where girls simply weren't expected to be.

Sometimes one woman going first makes it easier for another to follow. ✨🤎
