My plan was to simply not give my kids phones or social media. Then I wouldn’t have to worry about all those online dangers. I actually looked down and judged other parents who did. Ashamed to admit that, but it’s true.

And then, my child was exposed to porn at 9 years old through a conversation at school. A kid had watched a pornographic video the night before at home and described the graphic details at school.

That was the day I realized — not giving a phone still does not keep them safe!

➡️ We can delay the phone, but we cannot delay the conversations‼️

That was 11 years ago. I’ve been on a journey ever since, a decade-long experiment, trying to keep my kids safe in a digital world. I’ve written 2 books, started a nonprofit and speak in churches and schools.

Even if phones are banned in schools, kids still have internet access at home. They will watch things and tell others about what they’re seeing and hearing online.

I advocate delaying the phone and social media. 100%. But it’s not the sole solution to keeping them safe in this overexposed, sexualized world.

The solution is to talk to your kids. Create a culture of open communication where you are their safe place to process everything they’re seeing and hearing.

Just because they’re home doesn’t mean they’re safe.

Online predators can reach our kids through games, apps, and chat features—often while they’re sitting right beside us. The answer isn’t fear. It’s awareness and ongoing conversation.

❌ “What were you thinking?!”

Why it shuts them down:
They’re already feeling embarrassed or afraid. This question usually communicates disappointment more than curiosity.

✅ “Help me understand what happened.”

Why it works:
It invites honesty before correction. Kids are much more likely to share the whole story when they don’t feel like they’re immediately on trial.

❌ “You’re grounded. End of discussion.”

Why it shuts them down:
Consequences may be appropriate, but ending the conversation means you may never learn what actually led to the behavior.

✅ “We’re going to talk through this first, then we’ll figure out what happens next.”

Why it works:
It communicates that the relationship comes before the consequence. Discipline isn’t just about punishment—it’s about discipleship and teaching.

❌ “I can’t believe you’d do that.”

Why it shuts them down:
Kids often hear this as, “If I’m honest, I’ll disappoint my parents.”

✅ “Thank you for telling me. I’m really glad you came to me.”

Why it works:
You aren’t approving of the behavior—you are reinforcing the courage it took to be honest. That increases the likelihood they’ll come back next time.

Looking for simple screen-free activities to do with your kids this summer?☀️

We asked Kinsey, our nextTalk podcast editor (and more importantly a mom of two boys under 4!), what her family loves to do.

Her answer?
“Since my boys are 3 and a half and 1, we really love simple things like going to the park or playing in the backyard. On hotter days, we will fill bowls with water and play outside splashing with toys and getting soaked. I also love being crafty! My 3.5 year old LOVES to paint. We also bake a lot together and I let him help me measure everything out, then my 1 year old is our taste tester”

We love this reminder that summer doesn’t have to be overcomplicated.

Kids don’t need a perfectly planned calendar. Sometimes the moments they remember most are getting soaked in the backyard, helping bake cookies, painting at the kitchen table, or spending an afternoon at the park.
Some other simple screen-free ideas: ☀️ Sidewalk chalk ☀️ Nature walks ☀️ Library trips ☀️ Blanket forts ☀️ Dance parties ☀️ Sprinkler days
