Anyone can run 6.7 km.

Now do it again. And again. Every hour, on the hour. By hour 20 it’s dark, and one by one the runners stop. The last one standing wins. That’s a backyard ultra, and we’re building the app for it.

How many hours would you last? 👇

The slowest runner in this race can still win.

In a backyard ultra everyone starts together, every hour. Run the 6.7 km loop in 40 minutes or in 59, it doesn’t matter. Back before the bell and you’re still in. The clock doesn’t care how fast you are, only if you keep going. The last one still going wins.

Fast or slow, which one are you? 👇

24 hours into a backyard ultra.

Marathon in loop 7, 100 km in loop 15, 100 miles in loop 24.

And the bell keeps ringing, every single hour.

Anyone can be number one on this leaderboard. For one month.

All it takes is the most loops in one race: 6.7 km, every hour, longer than everyone else. On the 1st you’re back at zero. Only your best race stays, on the overall list.

We built this into NextYard. How many loops would you need?

Names and numbers: demo.

In this running race, 1 second late and you’re out.

It’s called a backyard ultra. Every hour a bell rings and you run 6.7 km. Back before the next bell and you’re still in. One second after and your race is over, on loop 1 or on loop 24.

Send this to the runner who’s always late. 👇

The race doesn’t start at the bell. It starts at sunset.

The first night of a backyard ultra changes everything. You see a few metres. Stopping gets cold. Your stomach stops cooperating. And the hour stays exactly the same.

What gets you through the night? 👇

Finish first in this race, and you win nothing.

It’s called a backyard ultra. You run 6.7 km, every hour, on the hour. The fast ones sit and wait, the slow ones walk in, and everyone starts again together. It only ends when one runner is left, and even then they have to finish one more loop, alone.

How many hours would you last? 👇

App screen: demo race.

Why backyard ultra runners will switch from Strava to NextYard: Strava tracks your run, but a backyard ultra asks a different question. Will you make the bell?

NextYard counts down to every start, shows your arrival time and your gap to the bell, live, and your crew sees when you’re back.

Comment „Nextyard“ and we’ll send you the waitlist link.

Not affiliated with Strava.

You’ve been running for 31 hours. Scanning for reasons to quit.

Legs. Cold. Chair. Sleep. Found four. Then it found the clock: four minutes to the next start. So you get up. Loop 32.

In a backyard ultra the bell doesn’t wait. NextYard keeps the clock, so you don’t have to.

What would keep you in the chair? 👇

Every runner in this race gets a DNF. Except one.

Yard: one loop of 6.706 km, one hour, then the next one starts. Bell: the signal that starts every yard. Not in the start area when it rings, and your race is over. DNF: did not finish, even after 100 miles. Assist: the last runner to stop before the winner. Last One Standing: the winner, who has to finish one more yard alone.

Send this to the friend who keeps asking how far your race is.

We tried to break our own race clock. 127 times.
5 minutes in a chair with drifting GPS: we count 0 m. A 500 m GPS jump in one second: thrown out. The clocks change
during your race: the next bell is still exactly one hour later. Phone left in the tent: you’re still in. Crew tap and automatic finish
2 minutes apart: first signal wins.
If one of these is wrong at hour 30, you make the wrong call.

3 a.m. You check your phone, and now you can’t see the trail.

That’s what a white screen does in the dark. That’s why NextYard is dark from the start. And at night it gets even darker: deep red on black, brightness down, and the race page shows only countdown, distance and loop. Plus one extra warning, five minutes before the start.
