Anita Horton paints abstracted flowers and natural objects on paper.

After months of experiencing great loss, Horton moved to Austin in 2023 and began experiencing the vegetative blooming cycles of the Texas hill country.

Horton uses reference photographs and memories to construct my brightly colored compositions. Her work aims to provide viewers joy as they gaze upon her work and reflect upon beauty and hope for the future.

“I am interested in color, repetition, and pattern as by-products of societal consumption juxtaposed with the natural world. For as long as I can remember, I have moved through my environment collecting, sorting, and organizing things, including seed pods, small shiny objects, bits of colorful paper, and crushed chunks of metal. While breaking down boxes one day, I became interested in the idea of combining man-made goods with natural plants and fibers. I began experimenting with cereal boxes, palm fronds, and embroidery thread. When I noticed my son’s pile of soda cans waiting to be recycled, I was attracted to the color and wondered how I could incorporate them into what I was creating. Thus began the odyssey of collecting, sorting, organizing, and weaving aluminum cans with palm fronds from my yard.”

“Quivers and Totems are both experimental series using repetition and pattern to create new objects out of familiar material. In these pieces, I am exploring the idea that repetition of a pattern can create a unified whole while engaging the viewer in a different conversation about repurposing trash. With a concerted focus on design, I rearrange the bits to become something original yet familiar, a compelling union of the beauty and waste in our world.”

Jacob Spacek (b. 1986) is a contemporary painter based in Seguin, Texas. A graduate of Texas State University, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus on painting.
Raised in rural Adkins, Texas, nestled in the sand hills southeast of San Antonio, Spacek returned to the region after more than a decade in Houston. Here, the familiar terrain, rolling landscapes, weathered machinery, and sun-beaten relics reignited his creative vision.
Today, his American Rural series reflects that return: a synthesis of personal faith, memory, and craftsmanship. Through simplified geometry, exaggerated color, and quiet symbolism, Spacek transforms rural relics into contemplative meditations on endurance, transcendence, and the sacred within the ordinary.

“This piece is part of a larger series that explores the quiet authority of rural American structures—objects that exist without spectacle yet carry the weight of memory, labor, and time. Water tanks, fences, silos, and signage become forms that hold a kind of cultural residue and also as symbols to be decoded. These are elements of the landscape that are often overlooked, yet they shape the visual and emotional character of the environments they inhabit. This one began with reference photos taken just off of I-35 on the way back from Laredo. Everything there felt quiet, slower, and forgotten. The disheveled house, remnants of a shed, and a sign post which said nothing and pointed nowhere grabbed my attention. There was no clear focal point, no real activity, just a grouping of things that felt like they had been left behind but not fully abandoned. The sign sits at the center, but it doesn’t do anything. I am a Texas native with a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, who strives to produce works that articulate my stance on ecological issues and encourages a shift away from anthropocentric viewpoints. I often consider my work to be conceptually driven, allowing my ideas to define which mediums are best suited for my work. The organic materials incorporated into my work often are personal to my experiences as a practicing homesteader, such as homemade compost, wood ash, heirloom seeds, and self-foraged berries.

My work explores the tension of living in the Anthropocene, where individuals navigate the fast-paced systems we have built while remaining inherently connected to the natural world. While humans are inherently linked to nature through our physical makeup, there has been a notable divergence from the natural rhythms of life among many individuals. As I continue through my own personal journey of rekindling my relationship with nature, I seek to articulate my struggles in doing so within my work and the many delights of the journey in between. by @nexusgallerytx

🪏Introducing Texas-based blacksmith, Alexander Kamelhair!

Alexander is a material and process driven artist, giving equal attention to both conceptual and studio practice. These values generally manifest in the creation of substantial material objects and/or place-making through installation or intervention in remote landscapes. He is particularly interested in the physical properties of his materials and the juxtaposition of these qualities against both metaphysical and formal negative space. Through this preoccupation, an exploration of ontological concerns has become a recurring motif in his practice. He has worked as a journeyman blacksmith in Austria, Spain, Estonia, and Italy, and he holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Texas State University in San Marcos TX, and a Master of Arts degree from the Estonian Academy of Art in Tallinn. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally and was included in the National Ornamental Metal Museum’s 2019 exhibition 40 Under 40: The Next Generation of American Metal Artists. He currently resides in the Big Bend region of Far West Texas, USA where he draws inspiration from the surrounding landscape and the distinct geological features and floral phenomena that distinguish the Chihuahuan desert.

I am interested in the irreconcilable rift between the phenomenal and the noumenal. I am interested in deep time and imperceptible change. I am interested in (a)causality, chaos/logos, and the persistence of entropy. I employ these forces through a personal practice of labor and handwork inspired by the landscape I inevitably find myself in.

I am interested in the elusive nature of “place.” I have come to understand “place” not as a singular point at the intersection of three axes – independent of time – but instead by @nexusgallerytx

“I enjoy art whose subject is inconspicuous and mundane, not a grandiose scene dripping in significance.
Candid portraits of friends and family are fluid — unable to be seen from just one lens but seen in many
different perspectives. Everything I make is about a specific moment, but they are also about looking back
at these moments. Each experience and what could be gained from it is different – and I find that
beautiful.
Taking photographs helps make my memories more concrete and tangible. I am hardheaded in the
beginning to replicate this in my work, but as I continue, I let my intuition take control. The act of
remembering and making is similar; you are constantly misshaping and changing from the original
leaving something entirely new behind. It is this act of change and modification that transforms my own
view on what I thought it had meant beforehand.
Monet’s paintings and their ability to capture moments of light and color inspire my work. It is
something that is pointlessly hard to do, and yet he does it so well. With my work though, I strive to make
it more human where we can enjoy emotions, perspectives, and unique understandings.
My peers that I have worked with for the last couple of years have influenced me as well: Joy King,
Skyler Hawkins, Hannah South, and many more. If it weren’t for my classmates, I don’t think my art
would have developed in the way it has. My focus is everyday life, almost mundane and routine in
subject, and my peers have experienced them with me as we grew together.”
