🎬 Brasil-Norge FilmKlubb presents: Betânia

In the ever-shifting landscape of the Lençóis Maranhenses, a 65-year-old matriarch tries to begin again while the world around her is changing.

Betânia (2024) is the award-winning debut feature from Brazilian writer-director Marcelo Botta, following its premiere in the Panorama section of the Berlin International Film Festival. Set among the otherworldly white dunes of Maranhão, the film follows Betânia, who returns to her home village after her husband’s death holding fast to her independence, her community and her joy as tradition and modernity collide around her.

Luminous, tender and often funny.

Fun fact: Lead actress Diana Mattos had never held a speaking film role before. She was discovered through an Instagram photo and thought the casting call was a prank, hanging up the first time.

The soundtrack alone is a trip: 60+ musical moments, from the ritual theatre of Bumba Meu Boi to the reggae rhythms that earned Maranhão its nickname, “Brazil’s Jamaica.”

This is the film opening Brasil-Norge FilmKlubb’s very first screening.

🗓️ Tuesday 22 September 2026
🚪 Doors / foyer: 17:30 · 🎬 Film starts: 18:00
