Small Business Spotlight: @lapaisananf 🌮🧡

What started as a local Latin grocer has grown into a beloved neighbourhood destination for authentic Latin flavours — and it’s all thanks to the hard work, dedication, and passion of Pranay and Melissa.

Their journey began with La Paisana, a local Latin grocery store offering a wide selection of authentic Latin food products, ingredients, and flavours that brought a taste of home to the community. With countless hours of hard work and an incredible community rallying behind them, Pranay and Melissa took a leap of faith and opened a neighbouring Mexican restaurant under the same name.

Today, La Paisana Restaurante is serving up delicious, authentic Mexican and Latin-inspired dishes bursting with vibrant spices, comforting flavours, and traditional recipes. From savoury and flavourful empanadas to deliciously seasoned tacos, every bite is packed with the rich, authentic flavours of Latin cuisine. And don’t forget to save room for dessert — their sweet, golden, irresistible churros are a must-try!

Whether you’re stopping in for a hearty breakfast, a delicious lunch, or a flavour-packed dinner, La Paisana has something to satisfy your craving. 🌮☕🍽️

📍 La Paisana Restaurante
🕘 Tuesday–Thursday: 9 AM – 8 PM
🕘 Friday–Sunday: 9 AM – 9 PM

So, if you’re craving authentic Mexican and Latin flavours, come visit La Paisana Restaurante and taste what makes every dish so special. ❤️🌶️ taken in La Paisana Restaurante by @nfsbec

Building Black Women’s Entrepreneurship Ecosystem in Niagara

During the first Round Table under the Black Women’s Economic Security (BWES) project in collaboration with the Niagara Falls Small Business Enterprise Centre @nfsbec .

We mapped out the entrepreneurship ecosystem for Black women in Niagara, together. We explored:

• The current ecosystem. Does one exist? Who and what currently supports Black women entrepreneurs in Niagara?

• Their position within it. Where are they already connected and engaged?

• Connections and intersections. Which organizations, resources, systems, and opportunities touch their businesses?

• Gaps and barriers. Where are the missing connections, inaccessible services, and unmet needs holding businesses back?

• Opportunities. What could be changed, connected, or created to make the ecosystem work better for Black women?

• Data Hub priorities. What information, tools, and connections would make the Data Hub we are building genuinely useful?

This conversation is part of a broader process of bringing together quantitative data and qualitative, lived-experience knowledge to understand the economic realities of Black women better.

Because data can tell us what is happening.
Lived experience helps us understand why.

This October, we will convene two additional cross-sector evaluative roundtables in Ottawa, one focused on Black Women Entrepreneurs and another on Black Women in Tech.

This project is funded by Women and Gender Equality Canada (WAGE) / FEGC @wage_fegc

Starting a business? One of the first decisions you’ll make is choosing the right business structure.

Here are 3 common options to know about 👇

🔹 Sole Proprietorship
You and the business are legally the same. It’s generally the simplest structure to set up, but you’re personally responsible for the business’s debts and obligations.

🔹 Partnership
Two or more people own and operate the business together. Partners typically share responsibilities, profits, and liabilities according to their partnership agreement and applicable rules.

🔹 Corporation
A corporation is a separate legal entity from its owners. It can provide liability protection and may offer different tax and financing options, but it also comes with more rules, records, and administrative requirements.

So, which one is right for you?
That depends on factors like your business goals, number of owners, risk, taxes, and how you plan to grow.

Choosing a structure isn’t just paperwork, it can affect how your business operates now and in the future.
