Many have been anxious to know who would take over as the new alpha of the Ngogo Central group, since the Ngogo Westerners killed former alpha Jackson in 2022. Abrams has been the front-runner, and we can now confirm from pant-grunts that he is the alpha. However, his community has been fragmented by the loss of many more individuals over the last two years. Researchers witnessed the killing of adult males Lovano and Haden, along with several infants, by the westerners. High-ranking brothers Peterson and Carter as well as several younger males have also disappeared, likely at the hands of westerners or other neighbors.

Abrams and his diminished crew have every reason to be afraid of the Westerners. One of the biggest changes we’ve observed over the last two years is a dramatic shift in their home ranges. As Ngogo West grows ever larger with infant births and the immigration of several new females, including a few from the Central group, they have expanded their range to the east. Ngogo Central has been forced to the far northern and eastern reaches of their territory, where they now clash with other neighbors. Abrams and the other Central males have been disappearing for weeks at a time into uncharted territory - for us humans, at least - and we are in the process of expanding our trail system to adapt to this shift.

It’s been difficult and sad to watch the split take its toll. But chimp life goes on and there is still hope for the Ngogo Central community. Gus is making his way in the world while taking care of his orphaned little brother, Denis. The Central females, including Christine, have welcomed 14 new infants in the last year! We are excited to watch them grow up.

Our posts tend to get a bit fewer and farther between during the summer months, when most of us are at Ngogo with the chimps. We'll still plan to regularly post photos and updates here but if you want more Ngogo content, you should check out the 2017 documentary Rise of the Warrior Apes. Also by James Reed, the director of Chimp Empire, Rise of the Warrior Apes stars many of the Ngogo chimps, including the late, great Pincer, pictured here, and also goes behind the scenes with some Ngogo researchers.

You can stream it on Discovery+ or buy or rent it on Amazon or Youtube for a couple dollars. by @ngogochimps

Our dear friend and colleague, Sebastían Ramírez Amaya, was killed in a tragic accident last year while studying chimpanzees at Ngogo for his PhD dissertation. To honor Sebastían, his family, friends, and colleagues have created the Sebastían Ramírez Amaya memorial scholarship to support Masters and PhD students from developing nations who conduct research and conservation projects on wild primates.

We've raised approximately $19,000 of our $25,000 fundraising goal for this endowed scholarship. Please consider donating to help us reach our goal.

Donations can be sent through Paypal to sebscholarshipfund@gmail.com. Once our fundraising campaign ends, we will send all pledges to IPS, who will then send out tax receipts. by @ngogochimps

For all the Gus fans out there, NCP co-director and Chimp Empire Scientific Advisor, John Mitani, was just at Ngogo and updated Netflix on what's going on with Gus:

"Gus is one of the breakout stars of Chimp Empire: an underdog and a bit of a loner, trying to find his footing in (chimp) society. We can all relate — it turns out he’s also a favorite subject of the Ngogo researchers as well as a fan favorite.

But Gus has made progress in adolescence (he was 14 when we met him). While still not fully mature, Gus has had to grow up fast due to difficult circumstances: His mother, Sills, died last year, and he’s “stepped in to take care of his juvenile brother, Denis,” Mitani says.

While he might come across as adorably awkward on the show, don’t worry for Gus, Mitani adds. “He’ll struggle during the next few years to fit in the social worlds of the older adult males. But with time, he will.”"

*Spoiler alert*

What #ChimpEmpire director James Reed said on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast is true. The scientists at Ngogo likely are better at staying emotionally detached from some of the more gruesome things we’ve seen over the years than people with less experience watching chimps. He’s also right though that some things are still really hard for us to see. Like so many of you, what happened to Pork Pie left us all reeling.

To give you all a small glimpse into how we were feeling after Pork Pie’s death, here’s an email NCP co-director John Mitani sent to everyone who works at Ngogo right after it happened:

“I imagine that it’s glum in camp with the passing of Pork Pie. He was one of my favorites, who knew that he and the other chimps owned the forest, not us. He was a loner and a laggard, which may have led to his death, but when he caught up to the other chimps he’d often sneak
up behind me on a trail and calmly wait until I moved off, so that he could continue unimpeded. That’s one lesson we can learn from Pork Pie. We are visitors at Ngogo. The forest belongs to
the chimps and the other wildlife there.

Goodbye Pork Pie. RIP.”
