MANGOI NGOI: FROM MY GRANDMOTHER’S VOICE TO MY MUSIC

As a child, some of my happiest moments were the simple ones. I remember my grandmother singing to us, “Mangoe ngoe ndiani ndiam chinjiribanga…”

She would sing, and we would listen, laugh, sing along, and play with our cousins. We didn’t think much about those moments back then. We were just children, enjoying our childhood, surrounded by family, love and the beautiful sounds of home. My grandmother probably didn’t realise that every time she sang that folklore song, she was giving me something I would carry for the rest of my life.

Time passed. We grew up. Life took us in different directions. But some memories never leave you. Sometimes, all it takes is a familiar melody to take you straight back to the people, places, and moments that made you who you are.

Years later, that childhood memory inspired us to create MANGOI NGOi—a fresh Afro-Amapiano interpretation of the folklore song my grandmother used to sing.

What began as a childhood memory has become music. What was once sung among family has the chance to be heard by a new generation.

This song is my way of honouring my grandmother, celebrating our childhood and keeping a piece of our culture alive through music.

Because sometimes, our greatest musical inspiration isn’t found in a studio. Sometimes, it begins in the home, in the voice of a grandmother, surrounded by children who don’t yet understand the value of the memories they are making

We grew up with the memory. Now we move to the rhythm.

For more than two decades, I’ve had the privilege of working with artists across generations, watching talent rise, evolve, and leave its mark on our culture. Now and then, a young voice comes along that reminds us why music matters.

Today, I am proud to introduce Sam, a 12-year-old Grade 7 student with a powerful story to tell.

His new song, “Life Yemu Ghetto,” is more than just music. It’s a reflection of everyday realities, dreams, struggles, resilience, and hope from the perspective of a young person growing up in our communities. At an age when most children are still discovering themselves, Sam is already using his voice to inspire and represent a generation.

As someone who has dedicated a lifetime to building artists and creating opportunities, I see this project as another step in carrying the torch forward. My journey has connected me with many generations, and today I’m honored to help open the door for the next one.

Please join me in supporting this remarkable young talent. The future of our music is bright, and it starts with giving young voices the platform they deserve.
