Great bonsai weekend in Portland with two presentations from Shinji Suzuki. First presentation was with the Portland Japanese Garden on Sunday with two demo trees, worked on by former apprentices Matt Reel and Tyler Sherrod. Then on Monday night, a presentation on display with the Bonsai Society of Portland @bonsai.society.of.portland #portlandbonsai #bonsaisocietyofportland #portlandjapanesegarden taken in Mark Building Portland Art Museum by @nhanse

Scenes from Volcano National Park on the island of Hawai‘i. Didn’t see any eruptions but a lot of smoke and a little bit of a red glow at night time. Definitely want to go back there again. #hawaii #kilauea #kilaueavolcano #bigisland #kilaueacaldera taken in Volcano National Park, Kilauea by @nhanse

Got some thread grafts going on these arakawa Japanese maples. The smaller ones were all air layers off the larger tree (first pic) which was originally had 4 trunks coming off it. #japanesemaplebonsai #momijibonsai #momiji #arakawajapanesemaple #盆栽 taken in Portland, Oregon by @nhanse

A look back in time for this Sekka Hinoki shohin that I’ve been working on for a few years. First two photos are from this past week. There are clearly some gaps in the foliage to continue filling in, but I’m pretty happy with how it’s progressing.

The third photo is when I originally bought it in Spring 2023
The fourth photo is my initial styling in Spring 2023
The last photo is an updated styling in summer of 2024

I’ve been making lots of bread lately. It’s been probably 12+ years since I did any bread baking. #bakingbread #bread #sourdough #crumbshots by @nhanse
