With great excitement, PERG announces “you were here before“ The exhibition presents the work of Nohana Sayama, the selected artist of the PERG Invitational 2026. Through painting and spatial elements, the exhibition explores themes of memory, belonging, and the relationship between image, material, and space. We cordially invite you to the opening reception. Opening reception: Thursday, October 15, 2026, 6–9 PM Duration: October 16 – November 15, 2026 by @nhn_sym
Welcome to Palazzo Monti, Nohana! Nohana Sayama @nhn_sym (b.2003, Osaka) is a Japanese watercolour artist based in London. Raised in Singapore, India and Japan, she paints to journal her past, to record her existence, to have nameless characters observe her in silence. Her interest in objects originates from a young realisation of the short-lived nature of material memory, through frequent partings with loved items and spaces. Through the unconventional use of Gansai on stretched British watercolour paper, she tries to express her incomplete social-cultural identity. Nohana recently graduated from the Camberwell College of Arts and will start her Master’s in painting at the Royal College of Art this year. Upon completing her BA, Nohana has exhibited internationally, including at galleries in London, Edinburgh, Leeds, Dubai, Berlin, Jakarta, Hong Kong and Milan. She is also the recipient of the Alexander Graham Munro Travel Award and the W Gordon Smith & Mrs Jay Gordon Smith Award at the RSW 145th Annual Exhibition, as well as the Watercolour award at the CASS Art Prize 2025. by @nhn_sym
YOU WERE HERE BEFORE Installation views — and a new arrival. Potential Light stays. Nohana Sayama’s painting has entered the PERG collection: a work about what is not yet visible, now part of what we keep. On view until 15 November 2026. 🎨 @nhn_sym 📸 @shotsbykeno #perg #nohanasayama #contemporaryart #gansaiwatercolors #installationview pergcollection by @nhn_sym
YOU WERE HERE BEFORE Installation views. Watercolour rooms on white walls and raw plaster. Sayama’s paintings move through PERG the way memories move through a house — some in full light, some at the edge of the dark. On view until 15 November 2026. 🎨 @nhn_sym 📸 @shotsbykeno #perg #nohanasayama #contemporaryart #gansaiwatercolors #installationview by @nhn_sym
YOU WERE HERE BEFORE Nohana Sayama at PERG. Fragments of rooms, objects and remembered places unfold throughout Sayama’s paintings — tracing what remains of a space after we have left it. Excerpts from the exhibition text by Iola Lawton, read by the author, accompany views of the exhibition. On view until 15 November 2026. 📑✍🏼🎤 @iolalawton 📸 @shotsbykeno #perg #nohanasayama #contemporaryart #gansaiwatercolors by @nhn_sym

‘I joined the Turps Spring Intensive looking to be in a space with artists eager for change. When I applied, I was struggling to step outside my comfort zone when painting new works; I needed to question my choices more actively to develop a growing and sustainable practice. The mentoring, group critiques, and daily studio conversations gave me fresh perspectives and practical advice I wanted. Everyone was enthusiastic about sharing and learning together, which helped me understand more about my art and myself as an artist. This course helped me to stop being scared to not make the "safe choice" in painting all the time. I feel it has been an essential step in preparing me for my current residency at Palazzo Monti.’ – Nohana Sayama, @nhn_sym , Turps Spring Intensive 2026 Nohana's upcoming exhibition: PERG, Ludwigsburg, Germany (solo) 15th October - 15th November @perg_634 ~~~ Applications for Turps Intensives are now open. To apply and find out more click the link in bio 🔗 ℹ️ Turps Intensives are eight‑week, studio‑based courses for painters at Turps Studios in south east London taking place across autumn, spring, and summer. Each Intensive brings together a small group of artists to work intensively with regular mentoring, critique and events, ending with a final exhibition at Turps Gallery. Turps Intensives are designed for painters who want concentrated studio time, regular mentoring and a strong peer group, but cannot commit to a full‑year programme. The course is especially suitable for artists based outside London or overseas, as well as those balancing studio practice with other work or responsibilities. Applicants should have an established painting practice and be ready to develop their work intensively over eight weeks in a supportive, critical environment. ~~~ Images: 1.
