NHSDA Dance Movie Screening 🎥🩰🎞️🌟

Join us for a movie night as NHSDA is honored to host the documentary “LIFT”. The film is about the life of Steven Melendez, who will be coming to SoTD with his company, New York Theatre Ballet, to perform at ECU in March (synopsis below for more information about the documentary).

The screening will be on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at 6:30-8 PM in Burnette Studio Theatre, Messick Theatre Arts Center. Bring cozy blankets while all of @ecusotd is invited to watch this screening!

Synopsis: “Filmed over ten years, LIFT shines a spotlight on the invisible story of homelessness in America through the eyes of a group of young homeless and home-insecure ballet dancers in New York City. After performing all over the world, ballet dancer Steven Melendez returns to the Bronx shelter where he grew up to give back to his community, offering a New York Theatre Ballet workshop to children. His traumatic reaction to the shelter from his childhood sends him on an unexpected journey with three kids to reckon with a past he had escaped from through ballet… The children he mentors offer him insight into turning a hidden trauma into dance, and together they make an aristocratic art form into an expression all their own.” (LIFT, “About”, 2022, https://www.liftdocumentary.com/about) taken in Messick Theater Arts Center by @nhsda_ecu

Presenting... NCDEO 2025 Conference “Imagination & Innovation” at ECU! 🎤📖🪩🩵

As we hosted the @ncdeo conference at our @ecusotd @ecudanceprogram , conference attendees networked and experienced incredible sessions.

We recognize #ARRRGH own faculty members Tommi Galaska, @saywardgrindley , @tim.j.lynch , and @jessinamst , who appeared in an outstanding lineup of presenters.

Shoutout to Sayward Grindley, our teaching assistant professor of dance, who was chosen as one of NCDEO’s 2025 Outstanding Dance Educator Award winners!

Thank you to @johndadixon for helping with lighting and tech to show these educators’ presentations. We appreciate every one of our volunteers from ECU and the NCDEO board for making this conference happen!

February 15 : NCDEO 2025 Conference: Imagination and Innovation! Join us on Saturday, February 15th at East Carolina University for an amazing day of dance, discussion, sharing, and learning.
March 2-8 : Dance A Difference Week is a week of dance based community service spread throughout the nation and is always the first full week in March.
June 5 : Senior Day of Recognition is a day to celebrate all inducted students who are graduating by tagging them and us on social media.

This winter break is the time to apply for dance internships to work in the professional dance industry by summer! Get a taste for what it’s like working behind the scenes for professional dance companies by being resident advisors for dance student living, administrative assistants, social media and marketing interns, health & wellness interns, and more! Prepare for your applications by gathering necessary information and updating your resumes, cover letters, and recommendation letters.

How to Get More Involved in ECU’s NHSDA 📖

Here are a few ways to be more engaged in our artistic merit club organization…
- Coming to meetings and actively participating in community involvement.
- Developing and presenting ideas you want to take to NDEO conferences or attending workshops.
- Helping the club find places to donate to when we fundraise or aid in providing funding for the betterment of the program.

NHSDA celebrates dance arts as an academic achievement. ECU’s mission is to recognize outstanding artistic merit, leadership, and academic achievement in students studying dance in public and private schools in K-12 education, dance studios, community centers, performing arts organizations, and colleges/universities. Our dance program has dancers from all backgrounds with excellent dance education and celebrates those with high academic merit. At graduation, seniors involved in NHSDA receive chords for their artistic and educational merit.
