Big Bend 55K Ultra

It’s been two weeks since I completed my first trail race, and second race overall (Austin half in ‘23). While I wish I felt more ecstatic about the achievement, I’m still processing a lot of thoughts and emotions over the race. But I’m doing my best to make sense of them.

In the weeks leading up to the race, I visualized myself crossing the finish and feeling all the feelings that come with working towards a big goal. But when the moment came, the exaltation was fleeting. And what quickly replaced it was the question: why did I do this?

All the consistent work I put in, and I was left wondering why I put myself through so much pain that day. What was the point? Why did all the work I put in leave me feeling meaningless and confused?

While I still haven’t found the answers to these questions, I’m sure that this is just a big metaphor for life. Every moment, every person, every good / bad day. It all led me here to this moment right now I’m sharing with you. And at the very least, I’m proud to be able to take that away from this odyssey.

Anyways, I’m working on a write up that I’ll put out on Substack later this week. I’ll flesh out some of these ideas further and explain my line of thinking, as well as a race report if your into all that.

I hope this encourages you to get out there and aim high. Whatever you do, stay curious and stay hungry. I promise you that the more you look, the more you’ll find.

Best trip of 2025

Solo backcountry camp up at the East Rim for a night via Pinnacles Trail, then back down to Chisos Basin via South Rim x Laguna Meadows (full stats on last slide)

First solo camp. First time seeing snow at Big Bend. The firsts made for a spectacular and unforgettable experience out west. This trip felt like a true benchmark, a culmination of all my outdoor experiences, as well as a chance to put my gear to the test. Definitely my favorite trip to the best national park Texas has to offer.

Probably the most classic boulder problem at Erock and certainly quintessential for the area. A pain to get to, smelly, sandbagged, but all the more rewarding to tick.
