It’s so important to take a moment and acknowledge an achievement, no matter how small. Constantly trying to improve and reach new levels is only possible from those little plateaus of satisfaction. It’s like taking a breath before the next leg up.

Feeling accomplished… there, I said it.

And so it begins. I love the excitement (and sheer terror) of being faced with a large blank canvas, a head full of ideas and a few scribbled sketches.

‘Ether’ is the third instalment in this new Body of Work. See ‘Crucible’ and ‘Deluge’, Parts 1 and 2 in previous posts. After the fire and flood comes the Light.

Answering the Critics… very occasionally I get the odd comment, challenging my work and claiming a lack of originality. Well, here’s my response…

Trying to find the Light again… working up this piece with a Veil in greys and blues, then wiping back to reveal the colours below. I’m not entirely sure where this is going but I’m enjoying the process. I’m curious, what do you see… feel?!

The Second Pass - here I’m glazing with thin, transparent oil paint to saturate colour and deepen tonal values. This brings real depth and lustre, producing a luminosity unique to oil paint. This also adds a slight sheen, as I’ve added a little Walnut oil to the glaze. So, almost done. Now it’s time to let it dry and see the result.

Something new emerging on the canvas. The second piece in my ‘Fantasia’ trio. Working my favourite palette, this first pass has set the scene and will now be left to dry. Then I’ll be glazing to develop tonal values and deeper colours.

Please let me know if you like it. A Like and a Comment helps others to see my work and is always greatly appreciated 🙏🏻

The Third Pass. So very nearly there. After the previous Glaze has had time to cure I’m adding the final touches of light. I love working this way, using classical oil painting methods to build up layers of light and dark.

A Fantasia No. 1 - Glazing with Oil Paint. Here in the second pass on this piece I’m bringing in colour and depth by Glazing. This uses a thin, transparent layer to adjust both colour and tonal value. This method, instead of using direct colour, adds a depth and lustre that’s impossible to create with flat colour.

Just playing with ideas today. After I’ve spent a lot of time focusing on something big and thoughtfully constructed I like to freewheel a bit. It’s like a palette cleanser(!) for the brain. Next pass I’ll need to make some conscious decisions about where this goes next.

I’m allowing myself a brief moment of satisfaction. It worked. Well, at least I think it did. From a moment of inspiration, fuelled by our baking dry Summer, to a completed work. Now I invite you to look beyond the image and unpack the metaphor.

‘When Fire Meets Rain’

Whatever you make of it, I hope it brings pleasure.
