Well, after 117 years and six generations, it’s time for me to hang up the swannie & swing the old road gate shut on my stint looking after Lerwick.

The family first parked up here in 1908 — probably with a horse, a billy on the boil, and some seriously optimistic plans. Since then, this bit of dirt’s been through thick and thin, and so have we.

I grew up here. Through my childhood I learned that picking up hay, trapping possums & mowing lawns was how you earnt your pocket money, catching eels in the drain was our version of “PlayStation” and cows in a walk-through shed don’t care much for your personal space. Sammy the goose made sure I kept my wits about me — a feathered missile with a mean streak and a hatred of children. I was just trying to help Nana feed the chooks. Sammy had other ideas.

I’ve owned the place for the past 20 years. Some days felt like 50. Fences don’t fix themselves, tractors don’t start unless you sweet-talk them — and the tools have a habit of going walk about — and I wouldn’t trade it.

Over the years this place has seen everything: cousins up trees dodging the haircut brigade 😉, a garden fork versus my sister’s foot (spoiler: the fork won) 🙄, and wooden spoons with more uses than just baking 🥴. There’ve been 21sts, weddings, a few tearful farewells, and more yarns at family gatherings than a shearing shed in full swing.

To those who dropped in, lent a hand, or just came for a cuppa and stayed for the beer — cheers. You’re part of the place now, whether you like it or not.

So that’s me. One last look back, give the gate a decent slam, and head off down the road.

Thanks for the memories.

P.S. If you find Sammy’s ghost, don’t make eye contact. He still thinks he’s in charge. 🪿
