Ran into @mattjohnson__ during today’s long ride/brick.

I’ve followed his journey for a while now, and his consistency, mindset, and approach to endurance sports have been a source of motivation throughout my own Ironman training.

Cool to finally meet someone who’s helped inspire so many athletes to keep showing up.

Today I had my final easy run 2 days out from IRONMAN Chattanooga. I wanted to share the thoughts that have been lingering in my mind with the race approaching in hopes maybe it could help someone with their own race.

(***I was supposed to race alone at the time I took this video however Jones Beach 70.3 cancelled last minute so @winfielddunn & @dc3fit_ will be joining me! Yes, they are driving from NJ to TN within 48 hours of the race… MENTAL!)

After failing more times than I can count, these are the 5 changes I made that finally helped me see real improvements in my training and aerobic fitness.

1. Get a coach.

I spent a long time writing my own workouts and found myself making little to no progress.

I started working with @mikesmitth and over the past 11 months, he has completely transformed my athletic capabilities through structured, purposeful training.

2. Fuel your workouts.

I used to think calories were the enemy. Now I realize that couldn’t be further from the truth.

During long workouts, I aim for 60–90g of carbs per hour to reduce fatigue and keep my body fueled.

Running = gels or Bloks.
Cycling = carb powders and sometimes a little sweet treat 😂.
Swimming = Try not to swallow any pool water

3. Reduce or eliminate alcohol.

I used to go out drinking almost every weekend, even during training.

My training data made it pretty obvious that the workouts following a night out were either terrible or didn’t happen at all.

I’ve almost completely cut out alcohol, and honestly, it’s been worth it.

4. Find your people.

I’m a firm believer that you become a product of your environment.

Surround yourself with people who support you, push you, and want to see you succeed.

I’ve found that through @mttmendurance , where I’ve met people I can talk to about training, racing, equipment, goals, fears and everything in between.

Having that community makes endurance sports feel a lot less overwhelming.

5. Have fun.

Not every workout needs to be a PR. Not every race needs to be a podium.

Invite your friends. Invite your family. Enjoy being blessed enough to have a body that allows you to move freely.

I love racing and pushing myself, but I’ve also stopped during races just to talk to the athletes around me and enjoy the moment.

Keep pushing. Keep improving. But most importantly, have fun doing it.

5 weeks out from Ironman Chattanooga and 6 days after the deferral deadline closed, I dislocated and fractured my right ring finger.

Doctor says an injury like this is about 6-8 weeks, but I’m staying hopeful. Seeing a specialist tomorrow and hoping for better news. Still training, still moving forward, and still planning to race.
