My favorite solo off of @jake.worthington’s first album. From a song called “Closing Time.” Paul Franklin knocked this out of the park, as always. I forgot how tough it is to get in tune with a separate Steel Guitar track. 🤣 #countrymusic #steelguitar #jakeworthington by @nicholas_vanway

Had the honor of playing @billybobstexas with these fine gentlemen. It was a surreal feeling to work where so many of our heroes have worked before us. We also got to christen cousin Banks as the youngest “Tiny Tonker!” Thank you to everyone who came out and supported live country music! #billybobstexas #ghsstrings by @nicholas_vanway

So many great Tommy Detamore solos to love, but this the one that inspired me to be a steel picker, and not just a steel player. This is his solo from “Cowboy Peyton Place” on the Doug Sahm “Return of Wayne Douglas” album. I remember hearing this for the first time, and it absolutely blowing my mind. Even though Tommy called it “a bunch of junk.”🤣 This is usually about the time in the morning when Tommy would send me his “Word of the Day,” if he got a particular kick out of it. I miss you Big T, and your love for discovering new vocabulary! by @nicholas_vanway

Tommy Detamore: The newest member of Heaven’s Big Band. He had many names in my book: “Tommy D,” “The Big T,” “Treble Rebel,” “Show-off,” just to name a few. But whatever you called him, you knew he was truly a “larger than life” individual. He was my buddy, a mentor, a confidant, and one of the best friends I could ask for. He’s the kind of guy that you put stock in. If he said it, you could bank on it. Whether that be about his family, his friends, music, or his faith in God. We were friends for each-other in the times when we needed that friendship the most, and I’m grateful I got to experience his friendship for 5 years.

Aside from being a world renowned steel guitar player, he was a kind soul whose generosity knew no bounds. I learned that early on when I started playing and experienced my first mechanical problems. I called up Tommy, and after a quick visit and a few turns with a screwdriver, he had me going again. After a while, I decided I wanted to upgrade to an Emmons push-pull, and I knew who to call. I walked into Tommy’s house to three 1960’s Emmons set up and for the picking. “They’re all for sale. For all different prices.” They were all the cream of the crop, and he gave me my pick. I picked out Emmons 1230D, and after getting it home that night, I decided to figure out how it worked. In my usual fashion, I tried to reverse engineer it, until I realized I was no engineer. Tommy stayed on the phone with me until midnight instructing me how to put it back together. All while never losing his patience. From then on, we spent many FaceTimes underneath the belly of an Emmons Push-Pull, and every time, I learned more than I realized. Soon, the mechanical answers to my questions turned into “you’ll figure it out, Pig.” And the best thing he ever could’ve done was let me figure it out on my own. I already miss my buddy so much, and I know a lot of you do too. But we should have no doubts as to where he is. T, I know you can see this, and I promise next time I get to see you in your new home, I won’t rut up your sandy yard with my cattle trailer, and I’ll take my muddy boots off in the garage. 😜 taken in Cherry Ridge Studio by @nicholas_vanway

Trying to get my hands back in shape to go play some shows again! Here’s Buddy Emmons’ break on Fly Me to the Moon, off of the Swingin’ By Request album. Such an easy listening album with phenomenal musicianship on it! #steelguitar #buddyemmons by @nicholas_vanway
