I grew up in a Catholic household, attending church every Sunday with my family. However, I didn’t really have a personal relationship with God. Around the age of eight, my family stopped going to church after my dad passed away. Despite this, I still had an awareness of God, though He wasn’t a significant part of my life.

At twelve, I signed with Birmingham City’s academy team, and football quickly became my idol. Training every day meant I often missed out on socializing with friends, and football dominated my life. Although I occasionally prayed before games and thanked God when I scored, it was more out of habit than a true connection to my faith.

Between sixteen and eighteen, as a scholar at Birmingham City, I began attending a Bible study every Friday with some teammates and coaches. Tim Atkins, who led the study, helped me revisit and explore questions about my faith from my youth. This period was beneficial, but at eighteen, I was released from the team. Without a football contract, I felt lost and struggled with my identity.

Deciding to explore opportunities in Europe, I continued playing football, but it began to feel more like a chore than a genuine passion. Eventually, I made the decision to move to the States to pursue a degree and continue playing football. Initially, I planned to stay for only a year, but this move changed my life.

In the States, I joined Athletes in Action (AIA), a ministry that integrates sports with Christianity. This opened my eyes to new perspectives and deepened my faith. I learned to play for the “Audience of One,” focusing on playing with and for God rather than seeking human validation. This brought me immense peace and joy.

Now, I feel a profound sense of purpose. I’m at peace with many aspects of my life and find joy in worship and fellowship with fellow believers. My goal is to advance God’s kingdom, spreading love and joy in any way I can. I pray often, asking God to bless me so that I can bless others. I want to be a light in the world, hoping that when people see me, they see Jesus and His love. by @nicholasokoro_
