If you’re looking for hope that we can navigate our deep divisions with grace and humanity, I offer you @nick.beaulieu’s (he/him) documentary, @myomahafilm. And thanks to a partnership with PBS, it’s now available for widespread viewing.

“My Omaha” explores deep division on two profoundly different scales: across a city and within a family.

We witness Nick’s personal journey to mend a heartbreaking, politically-driven rift with his dad, a staunch conservative.

And we see his journey as an activist trying to understand and untangle the tale-of-two-cities racial divide in his hometown.

I first spoke to Nick for the podcast about 1.5 years ago, when the documentary was first seeing the light of day.

This clip focuses on his relationship with his dad.

They loved each other a lot. Randy never missed one of Nick’s games as a kid.

Yet as the story unfolds, and as we see time and again, their deeply-rooted beliefs and differing worldviews brought them to a point of barely speaking.

Then Nick’s dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. It was a wake-up call. If they were going to try to reconcile, the time was now.

They stopped debating long enough to sit face-to-face for a difficult, honest conversation.

As Nick describes it, it “did something to me that was so impactful” and changed everything. ✨✨✨

Watching Nick and his dad sit through the discomfort and reach each other again reminds me of what’s possible when we cut through the noise, get in a room together, and create space for love and curiosity.

Throughout the podcast episode, and in “My Omaha,” Nick approaches some of the most polarizing racial, political, and social topics of our day with beauty, openness, thoughtfulness, tenderness, and nuance.

NEW EPISODE OUT NOW

🎙️ On the latest episode of Making Media Now, host Michael Azevedo sits down with filmmaker Nick Beaulieu, director of the deeply personal documentary My Omaha. @nick.beaulieu @myomahafilm @independentlens

🏙️ Nick originally set out to document the racial justice movement in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska. But the film also turned inward, as he began recording increasingly difficult conversations with his father Randy, a conservative and Trump supporter who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

🎬 The result is a film that explores race, family, community, political division, and what it takes to remain connected when deeply held beliefs pull people apart.

📺 My Omaha premieres nationally October 5 on PBS as part of Independent Lens and will also be available to stream through PBS.
