This time last year I was devastated by the loss of my precious Mia. And although I am still deeply saddened by her passing, I’m filled with excitement about opening the organization I named after her. That being said, I could not imagine a better show to open with than renounce(d). Jordan Seefried’s usage of abandoned materials to explore the grief and loss of his Father very much so feels familiar to what Mission in Arts is for me. Jordan’s work struck a chord the first time I saw it. His ability to convey anguish through his art is palpable but in a refreshing way in that you sense a release of emotion with each piece.

Looking forward to seeing you here! Save the date: 22 October 6–9pm taken in Mission in Arts - MiA by @nickethad

This past year I had the pleasure of meeting Emily Royer. Not only is Emily one of the kindest human beings I’ve ever met, she is an extremely talented artist. In fact—One of my favorite contemporaries. I got lucky enough to work with Emily at Mission in Arts and was able to capture some portraits at her studio!

Be Nice or Leave.

I spent the afternoon with Dr. Bob in his studio in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans—where he opened up shop in the early 90’s.

During our conversation he told me about his origins, coming from Kansas as a teen, living in the French quarter at 16, and his studio there where he coined one of his most famous pieces, ‘Be Nice or Leave’ — A turn of phrase turned ubiquitous piece of New Orleans folk art history.

During our hours long conversation, a friend of Bob’s came in to drop off a piece of art from his now closed restaurant. “Just figured it was time to retire”, he said when I asked why he was closing. The art he dropped off wasn’t Bob’s but a close friend of his who recently had lung cancer surgery and could use the money. Bob told me he was looking to sell it for him, but the tears he was holding back gave me the impression that he was buying it for himself, to support his friend during a tough time.

Apparently that’s who Bob is. A giver, a caretaker, a doctor, of sorts. He’s big on donating his art. He believes all artist should. When asked why he said “You can always make more, and if it helps a charity, or if it ends up around the world you’ll never know who sees it.”

After our conversation, I snapped a few portraits of him in his studio—but I noticed a beautiful restored Dodge Rambler outside on my way in; His pride and joy. “One last shot?” I asked, he said “sure!”. And by the look on his face, this was definitely his favorite one—and mine too.

In 2017 I visited Woodstock, NY for the first time. Since then, I’ve treated the area as a sanctuary for my sanity.

Each year, I’d make the journey, some years more than others. Each time I’d trek up Overlook Mountain, spend some time at Karma Triyana Dharmachakra monastery, bring others there to experience its beauty, get to know locals, and experience what life would be like to live in such a beautiful place.

In 2022 on one of my solo trips, the universe brought my dear friends @joseydear and Jess to the area at the same time. They hadn’t planned on climbing Overlook Mountain, but the thought of a pilgrimage of sorts couldn’t be passed up. Luckily had my Mamiya 645 with me and was able to capture these awesome photos!
