For Your Consideration | Best Live Action Short Film “A RARELY SEEN PORTRAIT OF THE INDONESIAN DIASPORA.” - @ronnychieng The Daily Show “I really love the short and thought it was executed and written in a beautiful way. It was WONDERFUL AND EMOTIONAL.” - @justinchon Blue Bayou “A different kind of food film, one in which my very talented friend Nick sets about to use food as a lovely way to TELL THE STORY OF IMMIGRANTS and their relationship to their new home. WE NEED MORE FILMS LIKE THIS TODAY.” - @markbittman New York Times food journalist Nick Hartanto, whose previous film earned a Special Jury Mention at Tribeca, is regarded as the first Indonesian-American filmmaker to have an Academy Award®-qualifying short.   DALY CITY is an autobiographical story about an Indonesian boy and his mother who bring Chinese takeout to a church potluck and pretend itʼs a traditional family dish. The boy’s quiet observations lead him to question his parents’ behavior as they strive to find a sense of belonging in a new country. The Dishwasher @dishwashershort was awarded a Special Jury Mention at #tribeca2019 in the Best Narrative Short category! From the jurors: “This film celebrates the humanity and ingenuity of a character from the margins of society on a propulsive, fast-pedaling quest for the best tortilla in New York.” A huge thanks again to all the many talented people that helped make it happen! by @nickhartanto
Watch Atrophy now on @shortoftheweek !!! Thank you for the wonderful review by @chelsealupkin ❤️ “Alums Nick Hartanto and Sam Roden (The Dishwasher) are back on Short of the Week with an emotionally charged and deeply personal genre drama of nightmarish realism. Internationally premiering at Fantasia, Atrophy swept through the genre fest circuit alongside films with a much more classic approach to horror – which it is anything but. Carving out its own lane, the film is a psychological terror born from the fear of experiencing atrophy, the film’s very namesake. Starring Irene Tsu, who gives a powerhouse performance alongside Bert Matias, it’s no wonder why it has snagged so many Best Performance awards throughout its festival run. An introspective and often weirdly absurd exploration of coping and caregiving, Atrophy will deeply move you. When it comes to horror, blood and guts are probably the first things to come to mind, yet Atrophy presents an altogether different kind of fear to keep you up at night: losing control of your body. In truly harrowing circumstances, a stroke victim finds herself descending into a waking nightmare as her husband struggles to become her caregiver after finding an old karaoke machine in the garage. “Atrophy is about my parents,” Hartanto explains, “my mother suffered a massive stroke that left her half-paralyzed and unable to speak. The trauma of that event weighed heavily on both my parents, as their lives were forever changed.” Drawing from such a personal experience for its narrative is what makes Atrophy so authentic and that much more gut-wrenching.” - S/W Senior Programmer, Chelsea Lupkin by @nickhartanto
Prolific film and television actor @troymetcalf (The Middle, Babylon, Joker 2) and I led a workshop on acting/directing for the @gigharborfilm festival. We used DALY CITY as a case study to explore all kinds of interesting topics from casting to cut! Thank you to @jeremykentjackson for organizing these workshops and bringing us to beautiful Gig Harbor, WA. Had such a blast spending the weekend with all the panelists, which included directors @jerrymcnuttmedia and @tamradavis1 💕 by @nickhartanto
It was an honor to meet Ambassador Indroyono Soesilo and to have DALY CITY rep the Indonesian Embassy at EuroAsia Shorts 2026 in DC 🇮🇩 It was an incredible sight to see a line of moviegoers snaking down the street, packing the halls of the Austrian Embassy that was hosting the event. To my surprise the Indo staff served dadar jagung as hors d’oeuvres, so the audience could literally taste the final scene of the film. As with many Indo events, my favorite part is being invited afterwards to the back rooms, kitchens, where we all relax and stuff our faces with leftovers… Thank you to @indonesiaindc @austriainusa 🙏🏽 📸: @christianarya 🌽: @artharini_indonesianrestaurant by @nickhartanto

“It’s so important to see people who look like you in positions of power.” That reminder from the first Indonesian filmmaker to be in the running for an Oscar, and PAAFF alum Nick Hartanto captures exactly why PAAFF Keeps Philly Reel. Representation isn’t just about being seen on screen. It’s about who gets to create, lead, and shape the stories that define us. As we continue our capital campaign, we’re asking our community to protect our stories by supporting the spaces that make visibility possible. 💛 Rewatch our Town Hall replay to hear what’s at stake and how you can help keep our screens lit. 🎥 Watch and support: paaff.org/donate by @nickhartanto
Thank you to the Mayor @rod4dalycity of Daly City for this honor. For the past year we’ve screened at 40 film festivals all over the world and whenever I see the words “Daly City” written in program booklets or theater marquees, it makes me smile because Daly City represents my home. When I dream of my childhood, it’s always in Daly City…I dream of freshly baked pandesal, the sweet smoke from Fil-Am BBQ and of course I dream of the fog. Suffice to say this award represents so much to me. There’s a line in the movie where a character describes an event where his son wins an award that grants him the opportunity to shake the Mayor of Daly City’s hand, and that actually happened to me in 6th grade, making this some kind of cosmic moment, going full circle, and allowing me to shake the Mayor’s hand once more now as an adult. Thank you 🙏🏽 by @nickhartanto
DALY CITY won the Audience Award for Best Live-Action Narrative Short Film at the Pittsburgh Shorts & Script Competition at the 44th Three Rivers Film Festival @filmpgh Thank you to the incredible Pittsburgh audience and to @paul_sloop for moderating the Q&A with Producer @clarapy28 🙏🏽 by @nickhartanto
