@christopherluxon's government has now formally disestablished the standalone Ministry for the Environment, folding it into the new Ministry of Cities, Environment, Regions and Transport alongside housing, transport and local government functions.

Before the merger, sceptical public servants had already nicknamed the proposed mega ministry “METH” — shorthand for the Ministry for the Environment, Transport and Housing.

The merger comes after nearly three years of climate and environmental rollbacks, including scrapping the clean car discount, cancelling the NZ Battery Project, cutting billions from emissions reduction programmes, cutting the Environment Ministry’s baseline funding, abandoning dozens of actions from the first Emissions Reduction Plan, weakening climate reporting, expanding fast track development powers, backing new fossil gas supply and coal use, and weakening protections affecting wetlands, freshwater, forests and biodiversity.

The Government says the new mega ministry will reduce duplication and better coordinate housing, transport, infrastructure and environmental policy. Critics warned that burying environmental functions inside a development focused super ministry risked sidelining environmental protection.

A standalone Ministry for the Environment existed for more than half a century.

Greenpeace Aotearoa has joined a trade complaint to the European Union, over the New Zealand Government's backtracking on climate action.

Over the last three years, we've seen this Government undermine pretty much every climate policy to exist, often explicitly to benefit polluting industries like the oil and gas sector, or the agricultural industry.

The right’s “nO moRE taXeS” refrain is such bullshit.

Tax is good!

Tax is how we get all the good things that we all rely on. We just need to make tax fair.

Tax capital gains, tax the rich.

NZ's PM @christopherluxon is a criminal.

New Zealand’s treatment of climate change in its new school curriculum has been called “incomprehensible” by University of Waikato climate education expert Professor Chris Eames.

Eames says the central problem is not whether fragments of climate-related material can technically be found somewhere in Years 4–10. It is that the curriculum fails to clearly and coherently connect human behaviour with the climate crisis students are already growing up in.

He says climate-related lessons are “scattered” across different years, while the role of human activity in causing climate change remains absent from the science curriculum until Year 11.

“It’s incomprehensible why climate and climate change aren’t mentioned in the science curriculum ... it’s there at year 11 and beyond, but that’s way too far down the track,” Eames said.

He warns that failing to explain what is actually driving climate change can leave young people without the systems thinking, critical thinking and agency required to understand what they are witnessing and how society can respond.

The curriculum change also comes amid a much broader reversal of New Zealand climate policy. Greenpeace has documented the Government cancelling the Government Investment in Decarbonising Industry fund, ending the Clean Car Discount, moving to reopen offshore oil and gas exploration, weakening vehicle-emissions settings and abandoning plans to price agricultural emissions.

And this is not only Greenpeace’s assessment of the direction of travel. In July 2026, the independent Climate Change Commission found that recent Government actions intended to reduce emissions were likely to be outweighed by other actions that may increase them. It concluded that current policies are insufficient to meet the third emissions budget or the 2050 target without further action.

Against that backdrop, Eames’s question becomes difficult to ignore: if schools do not clearly teach young people the human causes of climate change, “where are they going to get that when they leave school?”

Our home is on fire.

Temperatures hit as high as 43°C in France today. It’s the fifth major heatwave this year and hundreds of cities and towns across Europe recorded their hottest August temperatures ever recorded.

And just a taste of things to come in the oil industry’s #climatecrisis.

The thing that should make us ANGRY about this is that decades ago, the oil industry was WARNED that this would happen, they hid the evidence and did it anyway.

This is the oil industry’s climate crisis, and we’re paying the price.

The best time to ditch fossil fuels was 10 years ago or more.

The next best time is VERY F*CKING SOON.

We face a near uninhabitable planet.
