Hi it’s me hi.

Apparently it’s all the rage to do an intro post! All the kids are doing it so I figured why not. Also I’ve had some funny messages where people have no idea what I’m actually about so it seemed important.

I’m Nick, I grew up in Bristol but I don’t live there any more. My origin story is that I started selling perfume when I was a teenager. I realised I didn’t want to work in psychology whilst I was doing my degree, then I considered moving to Japan to teach English but I was getting good at the fragrance thing so long story short, I stuck with that instead (そのために少し日本語を話せます).

I’ve worked in all kinds of roles in the perfume industry, worked with (and interviewed) loads of perfumers and very importantly paid attention and soaked up as much knowledge as I can, which is why I know more about fragrance than your average bear - but not everything, because nobody does!

I mostly read and watch sci-fi, horror and absurdist comedy. If I’m not doing that or smelling stuff, then I’m probably building things in an MMO. My favourite comic book mythos is Green Lantern, and I have the insignia tattooed on my wrist. I love musical theatre, and I can carry a tune and belt when necessary (which is not as often as I’d like tbh).

I like to eat and drink extremely sour things because they distract me from my chronic pain condition and also help me focus. And I am irrationally irritated by people posting Makrut limes as bergamot. So if you want to make me happy, that’s how.

I’ve started a Substack.

I’ll mostly be writing from my perspective behind the scenes of the fragrance industry/trade, about my experiences, things I’ve learned, and dispelling some myths. Maybe the odd perfume review of things I find remarkable or interesting. Some things people have asked me to write about are things I would charge for, so certain posts may need to go behind a paywall in the future. For now, it’s all gonna be free.

I have a lot to say about 10 years as @olfictionlimited working with @perfumer.pia and sharing a brainslug, but most of all it’s thank you for being the Dr Bunsen Honeydew to my Beaker (and vice versa from time to time) and the Statler to my Waldorf.

I’m so glad we found each other and took the chance on “maybe starting a business”.

Surviving Brexit, Covid, everything-that’s-going-on-right-now, and still getting to create together and finish each other’s thoughts is a major blessing.

Now let’s get to the studio, we’ve got work to do! by @nickrgilbert

What. A. Week.

Esxence is a trip every time - it’s been so fab to see so many friends, colleagues, put faces to IG handles, meet stockists, and make connections with lots of new friends, potential partners and colleagues! I spent the majority of my time just excited to be talking about perfume to captive audiences.

Thank you to everyone who came by to say hello, discover all our projects for @olfictionlimited - Lab Editions, Demo Accords, and @eau_de_boujee.

A major thank you to @cdtangels who are all absolute superstars, especially @clorindaditommaso who I love to pieces and cannot thank enough. I did a fair bit of chatting about @vallensefragrance (our stand neighbours - Pia is the perfumer behind them so I have a lot of good things to say about them!) and to the awesome Pierre and Juline from @lorchestreparfum.

Feeling very lucky, exhausted, but raring to get back to the studio next week and start packing retailer orders and shipping product to our warehouse in Milan, ready for global distribution - and apparently planning the next production runs for everything…

I’ll still be in Milan tomorrow, doing a tourism for a change, but won’t be at the show for the final day. If you’re going, you can check out our fragrances at K09-11-13, and the Angels will look after you. by @nickrgilbert
