It's been an interesting gardening year. Beans and squash, usually staples basically didn't work.

Tomatoes were a bit slow but still ending well.

Calendula have taken over, but that means I have loads of seeds to throw around town to try make it look nice by @nicks_plot_sometimes

Decided the tiny 'barrel' pond was too small. It was about 30x25 cm in the end of this hole but I forgot to take a before picture.

Also wanted an are for insects to drink and birds to bath. So extended out the front as a shallow ledge.

Dug down about 50cm and kind of hit bedrock. Technically rubble, but amounts to the same thing. Couldn't go down further with the amount or effort I was willing to put in. So went wider instead.

Area on the left is a sloped exit with shelves at the back and right for plants.

Put in the liner, added a bit of water to hold it and let nature fill it while it was settling.

Buried the sides by building a wall out of rubble and clay that I dug out and folding the liner over it, then using the spade to push it deeper in. Added the hessian to soften the harsh look of the liner and to give plants something to hold while they grow into the edge.

Put rocks in the front area to protect the liner from birds claws and give insects somewhere to sit for a drink.

Need to get a better pump to circulate the water from the deep section to the gravel area. Also need new pots for the plants and possibly more plants.

Most of the plants surrounding it are wild violet so should spread round quickly. by @nicks_plot_sometimes

Brid, Bempton, birds.

Tiny yellow and black bird (wasp) crept up my shorts too and got me twice. Managed to remove it without injuring it too. by @nicks_plot_sometimes

Went to the art gallery and everyone was taking pictures of the wave. I like it but this was my favourite, weird kinda of space person with 'roots' showing everything is connected.

Even better was the upstairs with weird statues.

Then outside the @micklegatesingers_york were showcasing their skills. Part of a show based around the great wave. by @nicks_plot_sometimes

Rain ruined outdoor fun so time for freezer fun.

Stick all the food in the fridge and turn it off. Keeps the fridge cold and stops anything defrosting.

Been thinking about doing if for a while so it's started to grow ice out the top.

Boil water and put it inside close the door and steam removes the ice. This is lemony water because I was also descaling the kettle.

Couple of hot water top ups and jiggle the ice when you do, don't have to buy it speeds up the process.

While doing that wash and disinfect the drawers and shelves.

When the ice is gone dry as much as you can/want. The higher humidity the quicker if frosts up again.

Shelves and drawers dry and back in. Looks like new again.

When you put food back in, you get to organise that too. Throw out anything you don't want.

Really I need to pull the freezer out and vacuum the grills on the back. But that's too much fun for today. by @nicks_plot_sometimes

Reconstructed the cold frame today, forgotten to take a picture with the sides and top on 😂

Then got the leeks in finally. Most of them. Saved some for replacement later. Seen some people trim the tops when they put them in so did that on about half. Kept the tops to add to my tea later. by @nicks_plot_sometimes

One day I will think of tomatoes as something I like, not just something I eat.

Loads down low, and more to come above.

Not sure about this corn. Pesky squirrel. Found a bottle to protect the last cob.

Squirrel like to use the table to eat sunflowers. Cuts them clean from the stems

The calendula don't seem to mind the heat. I'm saving the seeds to throw on any open ground I can find in York.

Chard is growing back nicely after a chop when it was bolting. I really don't need to be eating weeds.

Calendula and chard still taking over the compost paths.

These beans decided they preferred the tree spinach over the teepee

Grapes are looking good too. Good deep roots to find water

Cosmos flowering well. First year they have worked for us, starting to go to seed, also to sow around the place.

Same with the borage.

Frog slowly boiling as the water level drops in the pond.

58.8 in the poly tunnel. I think. Some of the display failed.

Achocha another survivor of the climate change fossil fuelled heat waves.

Dahlias doing ok too. Severely slugged but putting on a show. by @nicks_plot_sometimes

More plantain eaten.

This time broadleaf and ribwort.

Leaves were a bit tough, probably need to cook for longer. Chopped the stalks smaller and cooked longer and they were better but still a bit tough.

Possibly a bit bitter, but it was hard to taste at all in chilli oil noodles 😊 by @nicks_plot_sometimes

Walked up'ill t'other day. Listening to @blindboyboatclub talking to @carl_chinn_1969 about working class history and the loss of accents. Also saw some rocks. And a caterpillar. #roseberrytopping #wainstones by @nicks_plot_sometimes
