NEW YORK, Oct. 17, 2026 — Protesters gathered in Manhattan’s Washington Square Park on Saturday for a “No Kings” rally, part of the nationwide movement opposing President Donald Trump’s administration. The rally came just weeks before the Nov. 3 midterm elections, in which control of both the House and the Senate is at stake.

Demonstrators carried hand-made signs on a wide range of issues. Many demanded the full release of the Epstein files. Others condemned the conduct of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and several called for stronger U.S. support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.

The Ukraine signs reflected anger over a decision the president made just the day before. On Friday evening, Trump signed an executive order waiving sanctions against Russia contained in a legislative package meant to pressure the Kremlin to end its war against Ukraine. Trump had signed that legislation, named for the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, only last month. It would have imposed tariffs on the top five buyers of Russian energy, or on countries helping Russia evade sanctions.

The waiver drew criticism from both parties. Republican Senators Thom Tillis and John Cornyn were among those who criticized the decision, and Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who played a major role in passing the bill, called it a “craven, cowardly action.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Trump was “rewarding Putin.” The move followed a deal Trump announced with Vladimir Putin the week before to release hundreds of thousands of tons of Russian diesel onto the global market as fuel prices soar.

The “No Kings” movement began with nationwide protests in June 2025. The first two rounds of rallies took place on June 14, 2025, and October 18, 2025, followed by a third wave in March 2026. #nokings #nypress taken in Washington Square Park Eco Projects by @nickstarichenko

In the age of AI, a true escape into analog life is exactly what Compound Art & Sound Gallery is about. Tucked into the quiet streets of Red Hook, it offers a rare kind of New York evening, one that keeps you grounded.

The space at 185 Van Dyke Street is built around sound. A Japanese HiFi system paired with vintage McIntosh components and Altec Lansing speakers wraps the room in warm analog tone, and the music selection is excellent. Yet what lingers is the atmosphere: this place feels genuinely made for its community.

A collaboration with Land Rover adds an unexpected centerpiece: an actual vehicle parked inside as part of the set. It’s a reminder of an era when cars were tools meant to be driven, not digital gadgets collecting your data.

Behind the bar, the passion is unmistakable. Michael and bartender Sam pour their soul into the work, guiding guests through Japanese whiskies, sake and margaritas with obvious care.

Away from Manhattan’s relentless pace, Red Hook lends Compound a calm, unhurried energy. It’s a place to feel creative, relaxed and connected to people, the kind that makes you stay for one more record. #redhook #redhookbrooklyn @compoundgallery taken in Compound Art & Sound Gallery Listening Bar by @nickstarichenko

🎬 LICHTING 2026 — 20 years of Dutch fashion’s next generation

For its 20th edition, @lichtingnl did what it’s done since 2007: put the ten best graduates from the Netherlands’ fashion academies under one arched ceiling at @rijksmuseum, in front of 500+ industry professionals and press — and sent this year’s class off with a standing ovation.

🏆 The winner: @arthur.wagenaar (Royal Academy of Art, The Hague), who entered through the open call and took the title. His collection Monk’s Practice / Monnikenwerk trades fast, social-media-driven inspiration for something slower: the patient, repetitive labour of monastic life, reworked into a genuinely contemporary collection. Craft over speed. A deserved win.

The full class of 2026 — every one worth a follow:
@arthur.wagenaar · @giuliozahnd · @goth.pop · @juliaverberne · @stasha.p · @hellion.sin · @teun_van_doorn · @domivangils · @milouschreuder · Casper Naafs

Judged by an international panel — @rijksmuseum, @highsnobiety, @timiletonja (Numéro) and BOTTER — the kind of room that can shift a young designer’s trajectory in an afternoon.

Twenty years in, Lichting still feels like watching the future clock in. The level keeps rising, the scene keeps evolving, and I’m excited for where it’s heading. ✨

☀️ Started in the Vondelpark with Dolly Sports — sporty, playful, color everywhere. The kind of set that photographs like summer refuses to end.

🍎 Then into the historic garden of Museum Van Loon for Wouters & Hendrix and their FW26 collection, “Forbidden Fruit.” The Antwerp jewelry house turned a centuries-old courtyard into something part still-life, part daydream — craft you want to lean in and study.

🎭 And the finale: Lichting, celebrating its 20th edition inside the Rijksmuseum Passage — ten of the Netherlands’ best graduates showing to an international jury, a classical ensemble echoing under the arches. Massive congratulations to Arthur Wagenaar, crowned Lichting 2026 for craftsmanship that stood a level above the rest. Twenty years of launching Dutch talent, and it still feels like watching the future clock in.

The level here keeps climbing every season - the whole scene is evolving fast, and honestly I’m excited for where it’s all heading.

Designers featured here — the high-res selects from your show are yours. DM me if we are not in touch yet. 📩

Independent coverage, shot on the ground. More frames dropping this week.

La Feria Jausieroise: Bulls, Paella and Adrenaline Beneath the Alps

Jausiers, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence — a first edition that brought the spirit of the South up into the mountains.

On Friday, August 28, 2026, the Ubaye-valley village of Jausiers held its first-ever Feria Jausieroise. From 6 to 11 p.m., the Champs de Tétou — the field facing the Plan d’eau — carried the flavour of Provence and the Camargue nearly a thousand metres up into the Southern Alps. I came to cover it. I stayed because it was impossible not to.

There is something surreal about a feria staged in an Alpine valley. The format is pure South of France — bodega atmosphere, festive music, bulls — but here the horizon is a wall of peaks. As the light softened, the summits turned gold and then rose, and the whole field sat inside a natural amphitheatre. Few ferias offer a view like this.

The paella was excellent — generous, fragrant, and gone fast; I went back for more. The drinks flowed easily all evening, and by dusk the DJ had the field moving, the crowd made up largely of locals who had turned out in force.

Then came the bull-running, the heart of any feria. A good journalist is meant to watch from a safe distance. I did not — and I’m glad. There is nothing like the jolt of standing your ground, then very much not standing it, as the animal comes through. A genuine adrenaline rush, the kind that leaves you laughing and breathless. It wasn’t without cost: several people picked up light injuries, the scrapes that come with the territory. Nothing serious, and the mood never darkened.

What struck me most was how complete it felt for a first attempt — good food, plenty to drink, the right music, real thrills, and that unbeatable Alpine backdrop. The atmosphere was pleasant and fun from start to finish. Jausiers has planted a flag, and the Feria Jausieroise deserves to become a fixture of the valley’s late-summer calendar. I’ll be back — and next time I won’t be watching from the sidelines.
