“We are not defined by our deficiencies or what is missing. We are defined by what is present. We choose our destiny when we have the courage to acknowledge our own gifts and choose to bring them into the world. It is the conversion of fate into destiny. A gift is not a gift until it is offered.” -Peter Block by @nickthierry

Sitting in class, I’d hear woodpeckers focused on their craft, which motivated me to focus on mine. In between classes, I’d hit the trail and see bunnies hopping, each with their own distinct flavor, this reminded me, that whether I moved fast or slow, I still had to keep it going, regardless of whatever downed trees or heavy storms came through. Lewis & Clark Law provides an on campus/in the forest experience rivaled by no other academic institution in the environmental protection space. I feel lucky to have been tucked away inside Tryon Creek Park, working alongside environmental law’s bravest experts for years. As they sued the Trump EPA, I built FrontDoorFax with the aim to increase climate literacy, fight for environmental justice, and shine a light on the issues surrounding housing inequality in our country. Swipe and see a bit of what made me fall in love with Lewis & Clark Law. Hopefully, it gives you some insight into why I’ve made environmental justice my life’s work. We face political headwinds today, but if we keep our beaks to the bark, a unique hop in our step, and stand tall like these Douglas Firs, we gon’ be straightttt. by @nickthierry

In courtrooms, classrooms, and boardrooms, the work of liberation lives on. Over two-hundred and forty years ago, Marguerite began this work for my family by escaping slavery and showing the courage to fight and win her freedom in court. A year later she also won the freedom of her children. Run up another hundred plus years and Felix builds the first school for colored children in his Louisiana town. Hundred years after that and my brother and the homies drop a book to educate the kids on systemic racism. Oppressive systems were/are no match for their intellect and spirit! May their intellect and spirit guide us all as we continue dismantling any oppressive forces we may encounter in courtrooms, classrooms, and boardrooms. I move, smile, and learn freely because of their defiance in the face of wild oppression. This Leadership Master’s degree is dedicated to Marguerite, Felix, Jordan, and all those doing the work of liberation. In ‘97 Rakim spit “the horrors be grim but yo maybe tomorrow we win”, that bar + the ancestors keep me grateful for today and optimistic about tomorrow. #Herdaptogen #herdaptogens #herdaptogenic by @nickthierry
